A transit of Venus across the Sun takes place when the planet Venus passes directly between the Sun and a superior planet, becoming visible against (and hence obscuring a small portion of) the solar disk. During a transit, Venus can be seen from Earth as a small black disk moving across the face of the Sun. The duration of such transits is usually measured in hours (the transit of 2012 lasted 6 hours and 40 minutes). A transit is similar to a solar eclipse by the Moon. While the diameter of Venus is more than 3 times that of the Moon, Venus appears smaller, and travels more slowly across the face of the Sun, because it is much farther away from Earth.
Transits of Venus are among the rarest of predictable astronomical phenomena. They occur in a pattern that generally repeats every 243 years, with pairs of transits eight years apart separated by long gaps of 121.5 years and 105.5 years. The periodicity is a reflection of the fact that the orbital periods of Earth and Venus are close to 8:13 and 243:395 commensurabilities.
Venus is the second planet from the Sun, orbiting it every 224.7 Earth days. It has no natural satellite. It is named after the Roman goddess of love and beauty. After the Moon, it is the brightest natural object in the night sky, reaching an apparent magnitude of −4.6, bright enough to cast shadows. Because Venus is an inferior planet from Earth, it never appears to venture far from the Sun: its elongation reaches a maximum of 47.8°.
Venus is a terrestrial planet and is sometimes called Earth's "sister planet" because of their similar size, mass, proximity to the Sun and bulk composition. It is radically different from Earth in other respects. It has the densest atmosphere of the four terrestrial planets, consisting of more than 96% carbon dioxide. The atmospheric pressure at the planet's surface is 92 times that of Earth. With a mean surface temperature of 735 K (462 °C; 863 °F), Venus is by far the hottest planet in the Solar System, even though Mercury is closer to the Sun. Venus is shrouded by an opaque layer of highly reflective clouds of sulfuric acid, preventing its surface from being seen from space in visible light. It may have had oceans in the past, but these would have vaporised as the temperature rose due to a runaway greenhouse effect. The water has most probably photodissociated, and, because of the lack of a planetary magnetic field, the free hydrogen has been swept into interplanetary space by the solar wind. Venus's surface is a dry desertscape interspersed with slab-like rocks and periodically resurfaced by volcanism.

The Transit of Venus is a Big Finish Productions audiobook based on the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who.
The Companion Chronicles "talking books" are each narrated by one of the Doctor's companions and feature a second, guest-star voice along with music and sound effects.
The year is 1770, and daring explorer Captain James Cook and his crew on the Endeavour are navigating the Pacific Ocean. Into their midst come strangers: the Doctor and Ian Chesterton, who are believed to have come from Venus. But the TARDIS is lost to them - along with both Susan and Barbara - and Ian makes an enemy of the ship's chief scientist, Joseph Banks.
The United States Marine Band is the premier band of the United States Marine Corps. Established by act of Congress on July 11, 1798, it is the oldest of the United States military bands and the oldest professional musical organization in the United States. Today, the Marine Band also includes the Marine Chamber Orchestra and Marine Chamber Ensembles.
The Marine Band is entirely separate from its sister military band, the United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps ("The Commandant's Own") and the 10 active duty Marine Corps field bands.
The Marine Band is uniquely known as "The President's Own" because of its historic connection to the President of the United States. The relationship between the Marine Band and the White House began on New Year's Day 1801, when President John Adams invited the band to perform at the Executive Mansion. Later that year, Thomas Jefferson initiated the tradition of Marine Band performances by requesting that it perform at his inauguration. The Marine Band has played at every United States presidential inauguration since.

Only 16 days after an 80%+ partial solar eclipse in southern California, another interesting and even rarer event got the attention of JCMDI's cameras - A crossing of the planet Venus in front of the sun... Using an arc welding shield as a lens filter, a tripod-mounted Canon SX10-is was used to collect over 10,000 images in rapid succession, creating a series of time lapse sequences of this unusual event. The 20x Zoom (560mm in 35mm equivalent) and full resolution of the camera allowed for some decent digital panning as the sun crossed the frame in each sequence. A Canon 5D Mk2 was used for some of the live video, stills, and additional time lapse sequences (not shown here) are available on the JcmdiStockFootage channel. The soundtrack is "Lunar Seas (Alt-Rev Mix)" from the "StarSpin EP"...

Edward Murphy, associate professor of astronomy at the University of Virginia, delves into the science behind the Transit of Venus, why they are so rare, and their significance not only in the past, but for the future.
Smarter Every Day Collaboration video: http://youtu.be/riwc3UgPaHw The Veritasium treatment of the final transit of Venus this century. The weather behaved for some key moments allowing me to observe Venus passing across the disk of the sun. The transit of Venus is steeped in historical significance. Observations of the transit in 1769 led to the first really accurate calculation of the Earth-Sun distance (or one astronomical unit AU). Since Cook was in Tahiti he then mapped the East coast of Australia and parts of New Zealand.
Launched on Feb. 11, 2010, the Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, is the most advanced spacecraft ever designed to study the sun. During its five-year mission, it will examine the sun's atmosphere, magnetic field and also provide a better understanding of the role the sun plays in Earth's atmospheric chemistry and climate. SDO provides images with resolution 8 times better than high-definition television and returns more than a terabyte of data each day. On June 5 2012, SDO collected images of the rarest predictable solar event--the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event happens in pairs eight years apart that are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. The last transit was in 2004 and the next will not happen until 2117. The videos and images displayed here a...
The Transit of Venus is a work inspired by the soundtracks of science fiction movies related to space, the composition of which was initiated during the space phenomenon occurred in 2004 which the scientific community called "Transit of Venus." Without seeking to be a work descriptive of a symphonic poem, this work divides into three separate sections where the composer seeks to describe environments and textures that somehow brings us to the knowledge, the nobility and grandeur inherent in the space adventure. In the first movement, intense rhythms and vigorous sought to celebrate the ingenuity, courage and acumen needed to conquer space. The initial motive of the first theme - initially presented by the horns and saxophones - serves as a leitmotif throughout this section, appearing now...

Venus passes in front of the Sun from the Earth's point of view very rarely. It occurs in eight-year pairs, but then with gaps of over 100 years between those pairs. CORRECTIONS: Ok, so I mistaked a few words. There's an early "2017" that should have been "2117" and at least one "day"/"year" swap. I really was recording that right before the transit and only had time for one take. More importantly, I said that 105.5 years before the next transit meant it would be mid-way through 2117. Actually, 105.5 years from now is the end (December) of 2117. Finally, I made a lot of simplifications, including setting my spreadsheet to use this 2012 transit as the zero-point for the sweet-spots. All improvements welcome!

Fettig. http://www.marineband.marines.mil/ It is not known whether or not Sousa witnessed either of the two transits of Venus that occurred in his lifetime, but the phenomenon was the basis for the title of this march and also for one of his three novels. The march received its première at a concert of the U.S. Marine Band on April 19, 1883, with Sousa conducting. The occasion was the unveiling of a statue of Joseph Henry, first secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, who had died...

A rare four planet transit in Sagittarius Rashi is happening in December,2017. Some physical, psychological and spiritual insights are told in this video.
Early morning, June 6, 2004, I took my 13" Coulter reflecting telescope to a river park in Edgewater, Florida where I met Alice Haldeman of Volusia County Library. We pooled resources, my telescope and her video recording equipment to shoot this irreplaceable video. My favorite part is the dialog as a person seeking psychic effects engages my son in the background and we speculate what's in her coffee. Here we're using my telescope as a projector, projecting the Sun to 18" in diameter and Venus to about 3/8" into a cardboard box with some Wal-Mart project cardboard duct taped to the bottom. Nothing but the most sophisticated equipment for this monumental task! Enjoy. We surely did.

Aptly titled “Once Around the Sun” (to indicate the year’s passage), the twelve mostly-reflective pieces were written, recorded and first played in the month to which they each pertain. As a bonus, there are three pieces Talbot wrote for his band “Billiardman”, here neatly arranged for the ensemble minus harp featured in “Once Around the Sun”.
