Port Elizabeth

Port Elizabeth, nicknamed "PE" is one of South Africa's major seaports. The city is the capital of the Eastern Cape and is part of the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropolitan Municipality.

PE was one of the host cities for the 2010 FIFA World Cup, which brought it to the attention of tourists as well as worldwide onlookers. It's golden beaches rival that of Cape Town and the city has a multitude of historical and cultural attractions.

The city is also the birthplace of a long list of South African musicians, Rugby players and cricket players.

Port Elizabeth is the centre of South Africa's motor vehicle industry, with companies such as General Motors and Ford having their assembly plants there.

Port Elizabeth is believed to have been first inhabited by San hunter-gatherer tribes 100,000 years ago. The first Europeans to arrive in the area were Portuguese explorers, including Bartholomew Dias, in 1488.
