National unions will hit the streets to stage a series of marches and mass meetings around the country from April 17.

The ACTU will start with a mass meeting outside Melbourne's Town Hall in Swanston St on April 17.

Other events will be organised in cities including Sydney, Melbourne, Hobart, Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Townsville, Rockhampton, Fremantle, Darwin and Townsville.

The rallies will coincide with May Day celebrations and were endorsed at an ACTU executive meeting on Wednesday.

The executive resolved to 12 days of community action as part of its national campaign to change industrial relations rules.

ACTU secretary Sally McManus said people around the country were ready to take action to change the rules and win more secure jobs and fair pay rises.“They know big business has too much power, and they know that when working people jointogether we are mighty and unbreakable," she said.

“Wherever I go in Australia I hear the same story –we are ready for change and willing totake action to make change.

"Anyone who wants to live in a better, fairer country, who wants more secure jobs and fairerpay rises, should attend these events and join the movement for change.”
