At ten years of age, Rahat Khan has no memory of his home in remote Orakzai Agency, in Pakistan’s Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), before it was swept by insecurity. In 2009 when he was only a toddler, the family was forced to leave their village.
In 1969, when UNDP was established in its current form, the world was a different place from the one we see today. It was one dominated by two superpowers, with many countries in Africa and Asia slowly emerging from colonialism to take charge of their own destinies after decades or centuries of external rule.
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) have recognized the utility and effectiveness of the UN system ‘delivering as one’. By effectively leveraging mandates and capacities, UNDP and UN Women are together prepared to support efforts to accelerate progress towards women’s full and effective participation and equal opportunities for leadership at all levels of decision-making in public institutions, a prerequisite for sustainable development.
Islamabad, 26 February 2018 — Renowned mountaineer Samina Baig was appointed the National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today. The first Pakistani woman to have climbed Mount Everest, Ms Baig will lead efforts to build national awareness and partnerships around the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate change, environmental protection and women’s empowerment.
The village of Jrando Dherai is located in a picturesque region of Swat district in Pakistan’s northwest, with gentle hills, forests and fertile fields fed with water from the clear rivers. Yet, for many years, transporting the village’s agricultural bounty to markets over unpaved paths was very difficult.
The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has approved the allocation of US$ 2.5 million for the continuation of the children’s education in the areas of return in South Waziristan (Serwakai, Sararogha and Tiarza tehsils) and Kurram (Lower, Central and Upper tehsils) agencies of FATA, Pakistan.
The Government of Pakistan and the United Nations in Pakistan signed the UN Sustainable Development Framework (UNSDF), also known as the One Programme III (OP III) 2018-2022 in a ceremony held in the Economic Affairs Division, Islamabad. Secretary EAD and United Nations Resident Coordinator signed the document along-with other UN agencies working in Pakistan.
