About VU

Enhancing research expertise & capabilities

VU competes with the world's best in a range of research disciplines.

We are rated above world standard in many areas including engineering, human movement and sports science, nursing, mathematical sciences and applied mathematics.

Our research informs teaching and learning, enhances the student experience, and can be applied to benefit industry and communities in Australia and overseas.

In Melbourne’s west in particular, we are actively engaged in programs to enhance education and wellbeing of the whole community.

Building a healthy West

As the University of the west, we are actively helping to improve the health and well-being of our community.

The people who live in Melbourne’s west come from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Research tells us that some of these people face more challenges when it comes to health and education, meaning they are at greater risk of chronic disease and socioeconomic disadvantage.

VU has a crucial role to play in undertaking research, developing effective partnerships and influencing policy to help overcome these challenges.

We are actively engaged in research and collaborative programs to improve wellbeing in the west.

The Australian Health Policy Collaboration (AHPC) promotes and supports a national policy agenda for the prevention of chronic diseases that improves population health and wellbeing in Australia.

Our mission is to inform and influence public policy and its practice, through the translation and application of evidence, to improve health outcomes in Australia and particularly for socioeconomically disadvantaged communities.

The Growing Brimbank Collaboration

Established in 2013, the Growing Brimbank Collaboration is a joint enterprise between VU’s Australian Health Policy Collaboration and Brimbank City Council.

Brimbank, a rapidly growing region on the north-western urban edge of Melbourne, is undergoing substantial economic and social change.

The socioeconomic disadvantage experienced by many can have lifelong impacts on health, learning, wellbeing and development if not addressed early. These risks contribute to the onset of chronic disease and reduce economic prosperity.

With your contribution, we can:

  • develop and implement interventions that respond to chronic diseases, applying them across Brimbank
  • measure the project's impact and make the economic case for investment
  • inspire policy change across Australia.

Research institutes and centres

VU leads a number of research programs across a range of important areas. Our research is supported by several leading Australian research institutes.

Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management

The Centre for Chronic Disease Prevention and Management (CCDPM) works with the community to raise awareness about lifestyle-associated diseases. It seeks to improve quality of life and reduce the burden of chronic diseases.

The CCDPM is well-positioned to act via research, action and intervention.

Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL)

The Institute of Sport, Exercise and Active Living (ISEAL) is at the forefront of research into creating healthier communities through active lifestyles.

ISEAL's main research focus is the psycho-social and environmental factors that might explain health behaviour change. ISEAL aims to make significant impacts on the human life cycle, from childhood through to old age.

Mitchell Institute

VU's Mitchell Institute for Education Policy was established in 2013 with support from the Harold Mitchell Foundation. The Institute's aim is to make a positive contribution to education policy, and ultimately, the social and economic prosperity of Australia.

Research is undertaken on Australia's entire education system, from pre-school to tertiary graduates, to find the best solutions to our most pressing problems. This research answers some of the questions about success and opportunity in order to develop practical policy solutions for governments, educators and communities.

Graduate Research Scholarships

VU’s Graduate Research Scholarships help cover the cost of study and provide a living allowance (stipend).

Successful applicants also enjoy world-leading researchers as supervisors, helping to prepare the next generation of researchers.
