The Governor of Oregon is the head of the executive branch of Oregon's state government and serves as the commander-in-chief of the state's military forces. The title of governor was also applied to the office of Oregon's chief executive during the provisional and U.S. territorial governments.
The current governor of Oregon is Kate Brown, a Democrat who took office following the resignation of Governor John Kitzhaber amid scandal. The Governor's current salary was set by the 2001 Oregon Legislature at $93,600 annually.
Article V of the Oregon State Constitution sets up the legal framework of the Oregon Executive Branch.
Article V, Section 1 states that the governor must be a U.S. citizen, at least 30 years old, and a resident of Oregon for at least three years before the candidate's election. Section 2 extends ineligibility to the following:
Oregon Constitution Article V, sections 4-7, outline the formal gubernatorial election procedures such as publishing the winner, ties, disputed elections, and terms of office.
Katherine "Kate" Brown (born June 21, 1960) is an American politician who is the 38th and current governor of the U.S. state of Oregon. Brown, a Democrat and an attorney, previously served as Oregon Secretary of State and as majority leader of the Oregon State Senate, where she represented portions of Milwaukie and of Northeast and Southeast Portland.
Brown became governor on February 18, 2015, succeeding John Kitzhaber upon his resignation. Brown is the state's second female governor, after Barbara Roberts, as well as the first openly bisexual governor in US history and should she win election in 2016 would be the first openly LGBT person elected governor of any U.S. state.
Brown was born in Torrejón de Ardoz, Madrid, Spain, where her father was serving in the United States Air Force, but was raised in Minnesota. She graduated from Mounds View High School in Arden Hills, Minnesota in 1978. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Conservation with a certificate in Women's Studies from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1981 and a J.D. degree and certificate in Environmental Law from the Northwestern School of Law at Lewis and Clark College in 1985.
Oregon (i/ˈɔːrᵻɡən/ AWR-ə-gən) is a state in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. Oregon is bordered on the west by the Pacific Ocean, on the north by Washington, on the south by California, on the east by Idaho, and on the southeast by Nevada. The Columbia River delineates much of Oregon's northern boundary, and the Snake River delineates much of the eastern boundary. The parallel 42° north delineates the southern boundary with California and Nevada. It is one of only three states of the contiguous United States to have a coastline on the Pacific Ocean, and the proximity to the ocean heavily influences the state's mild winter climate, despite the latitude.
Oregon was inhabited by many indigenous tribes before Western traders, explorers, and settlers arrived. An autonomous government was formed in the Oregon Country in 1843, the Oregon Territory was created in 1848, and Oregon became the 33rd state on February 14, 1859. Today, at 98,000 square miles, Oregon is the ninth largest and, with a population of 4 million, 26th most populous U.S. state. The capital of Oregon is Salem, the second most populous of its cities, with 160,614 residents (2013 estimate). With 609,456 residents (2013 estimate), Portland is the largest city in Oregon and ranks 29th in the U.S. Its metro population of 2,314,554 (2013 estimate) is 24th. The Willamette Valley in western Oregon is the state's most densely populated area, home to eight of the ten most populous cities.
A governor is, in most cases, a public official with the power to govern the executive branch of a non-sovereign or sub-national level of government, ranking under the head of state. In federations, governor may be the title of the politician who governs a constituent state and may be either appointed or elected. The power of the individual governor can vary dramatically between political systems, with some governors having only nominal, largely ceremonial power, while others have complete power over the entire government.
Historically, the title can also apply to executive officials acting as representatives of a chartered company which has been granted exercise of sovereignty in a colonial area, such as the British East India Company or the Dutch East India Company. These companies operate as a major state within a state with its own armed forces.
There can also be non-political governors: high-ranking officials in private or similar governance such as commercial and non-profit management, styled governor(s), who simply govern an institution, such as a corporation or a bank. For example, in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth countries there are prison governors ("wardens" in the United States), school governors and bank governors.
Thomas Lawson "Tom" McCall (March 22, 1913 – January 8, 1983) was an American politician and journalist in the state of Oregon. A Republican, he was the 30th Governor of Oregon from 1967 to 1975. A native of Massachusetts, he grew up there and in Central Oregon before attending the University of Oregon. After college he worked as a journalist including time at Portland's The Oregonian during World War II.
Later he worked in radio and then in television as a newscaster and political commentator. He made an unsuccessful bid for Congress in 1954, losing in the general election to Edith Green. While working for TV station KGW, he produced a documentary on pollution in Oregon, which helped to spur environmental cleanup of the air and the Willamette River. In 1964, McCall won his first political office, Oregon Secretary of State, followed by two terms as Governor of Oregon. As governor he worked towards environmental cleanup, the Oregon Bottle Bill, and public ownership of beaches on the Oregon Coast among others. Tom McCall Waterfront Park in Portland is one of several items named in his honor.

Support and opposition for the bill were bipartisan, which the Legislature passed.

Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber is resigning amid a political scandal involving the first lady. CNN's Suzanne Malveaux reports.
Oregon Gov. Kate Brown announces the steps she is taking to reaffirm Oregon's status as a welcoming state for refugees and immigrants. She found it unconscionable that President Trump's travel ban had blocked an Iranian infant from arriving in the U.S. to have heart surgery at Oregon Health & Science University. Standing behind Brown at a press conference on Feb. 2, 2017, are members of the Oregon law enforcement community and judicial system.
After being elected four times, Governor John Kitzhaber resigned after a member of his own party called his behavior bizarre. CNN's Suzanne Malveaux has the latest.
In 1967 Oregon took the lead nationally in creating legislation protecting its coastline. The state's Beach Bill declared that the entirety of the state's coastline was for public use and access and that no development could impede that access. But before the law could even exist, it had to be determined where the 'beach' ended and 'property' began. In this rare KGW News footage, Governor Tom McCall, a former KGW News broadcaster, assembled scientists, helicopters and a small armada of journalists and descended on the Oregon coast to measure the beach and make the determination of what would become public. This clip also includes footage of Governor McCall signing the beach bill into law and his comments on the occasion.
