The Weblog Awards

Welcome to the 2001 Weblog Awards™. I'm Nikolai Nolan, and I'll be your host for this month.

The Bloggies™ are publicly-chosen awards given to weblog writers and those related to weblogs in 30 categories. And not much more introduction is necessary. Here are the rules:

the procedure

From January 1, 2001 until 9:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (GMT-5) on Wednesday, January 17, weblogs were nominated.

The next day, a panel of 15% of those submitting ballots received an e-mail. It listed all the nominees of a category or the weblogs that receieved the most nominations in a category, depending on how many nominations were recieved for each category. They had until 9:00 PM EST Saturday, January 20 to privately submit their five favorites (six for Weblog of the Year) for each category. The five (or six for Weblog of the Year) receiving the most votes became finalists. I (Nikolai Nolan) voted in the cases of ties for fifth place. This panel was on an opt-in policy.

On Monday, January 22, the finalists were announced and voting opened again to choose the winners.

Voting closed at 9:00 PM EST on Wednesday, January 31. The winners were announced in BlogIRC on irc.turlyming.net at 10:00 that night, and posted soon after.

the now-defunct official rules

For this contest, a "weblog" is a page with dated entries that frequently have off-site links. Sites that are completely personal journals or site news pages were not eligible.

This contest was open to any weblogs that existed for a period of time during the year 2000, so weblogs that were discontinued during 2000 were also eligible.

the prize

Because of the large amount of categories, I didn't personally give a cash award to every winner, but the Weblog of the Year owner received 2,001 US cents (US$20.01).

Patti of I Really Must Insist You Leave contributed $1.50 for the Best-Kept-Secret Weblog winner.

Jish of Weblog Shmeblog contributed an actual award for the Weblog of the Year winner.

Dinah of MetaGrrrl contributed a domain for, er, this site. Never mind, that's not a prize.

The contest is now closed, and here are the winners! Thanks to everyone who voted.

Due to the large backlash by the weblog community, there will be another Weblog Awards™ ceremony next year. See you then!
