Testing cosmetics on animals is a type of animal testing used to test the safety and hypoallergenic properties of products for use by humans. Because of the harm done to the animal subjects, this testing is opposed by animal rights activists and others. Cosmetic animal testing is banned in the European Union, India, Israel, and Norway.
Using animal testing in the development of cosmetics may involve testing either a finished product or the individual ingredients of a finished product on animals, often rabbits, but also mice, rats, and other animals.
Re-using existing test data obtained from previous animal testing is generally not considered to be cosmetic testing on animals; however, the acceptability of this to opponents of testing is inversely proportional to how recent the data is.
Due to the strong public backlash against cosmetic testing on animals, most cosmetic manufacturers say their products are not tested on animals. However, they are still required by trading standards and consumer protection laws in most countries to show their products are not toxic and not dangerous to public health, and that the ingredients are not dangerous in large quantities, such as when in transport or in the manufacturing plant. In some countries, it is possible to meet these requirements without any further tests on animals. In other countries, it may require animal testing to meet legal requirements. The United States and Japan are frequently criticized for their insistence on stringent safety measures, which often requires animal testing. Some retailers distinguish themselves in the marketplace by their stance on animal testing.
Animal testing, also known as animal experimentation, animal research, and in vivo testing, is the use of non-human animals in experiments that seek to control the variables that affect the behavior or biological system under study. This approach can be contrasted with field studies in which animals are observed in their natural environments. Experimental research with animals is usually conducted in universities, medical schools, pharmaceutical companies, defense establishments, and commercial facilities that provide animal-testing services to industry. The focus of animal testing varies on a continuum from pure research, done with little regard to the uses to which understanding may be put, to applied research, which may focus on answering some question of great practical importance, such as finding a cure for a disease. Examples of applied research include testing, breeding, defense research, and toxicology, including cosmetics testing). In education, animal testing is sometimes a component of biology or psychology courses. The practice is regulated to varying degrees in different countries.

VICE News gets rare access to Europe’s largest primate testing facility, the Biomedical Primate Research Center (BPRC) in the Netherlands, where scientists try to find cures for the worst human diseases, while claiming to provide unparalleled care for the monkeys in the hope they live the most animal friendly life before and during testing. Once selected, inside the laboratories, monkeys are shaved, anesthetized, and experimented on for research purposes. Yet the center remains controversial. Protestors gather regularly in front of its gates and there are calls in the Dutch parliament to close the site and switch to alternatives for testing on primates. But as the BPRC explains to VICE News, modern science isn't there yet. In the meantime, it still uses about 200 monkeys a year for a sl...

MAC is selling products in China, where the company funds painful tests on animals in order to meet the country's archaic regulations. Please do not support companies that test on animals.

A BUAV undercover investigator secretly filmed the appalling suffering inflicted on thousands of animals inside Wickham Laboratories in Hampshire. Their findings are shocking and show that crude, archaic and extremely cruel animal tests are still allowed in the UK in a continual cycle of pain and misery for the routine batch testing of products. Wayne will be Previewing themes in his forthcoming book,The Humane Economy (Harper Collins/William Morrow, March 2016), Wayne Pacelle will discuss the extraordinary changes afoot in our human relationship with animals. A dramatic shift in public opinion, driven in part by growing awareness of animal behavior and cognition, is ushering in new public policies and business practices that are upending traditional forms of animal exploitation. Entrepreneurs and business leaders are at the forefront of this change, with Petco and PetSmart disrupting the conventional pet store model by forswearing puppy mill suppliers in favor of shelter dogs. Major food retailers – from Whole Foods to Chipotle to Walmart – are now embracing animal welfare and making demands of producers that will upend factor...
Revlon Does Not Test On Animals, Covergirl uses synthetic and vegetable sources first to make cosmetics. So, Covergirl should have some vegan products!!! Covergirl only results in animal tested due to the law and shares information online so other cosmetic companies will not test on animals. Covergirl provides other companies with information so animal testing can be kept at a minimum. Therefore, Covergirl results in less animals being harmed for testing throughout the world.
