It's the little things...small gestures and little gifts. Sometimes the smallest gestures are the most meaningful. You do not need to spends hundreds or thousands of pounds to keep your wife happy. The saying 'It's the thought that counts' is very true in marriage, and small, regular gestures that show that you are thinking of your wife are more meaningful than expensive, lavish gifts bought only for special occasions. 2. Your wife does not replace your mother. For many men, their wives pick up where their mothers left off. Your wife is not a replacement for your mother, and it is important that you do not expect your wife to complete your daily chores and organise your life. Your wife is your companion. 3. Don't be a dictator. Your role as a husband is not to lay down the law in your marriage. Marriage is about give and take, and if you want a content and happy wife, it is important to seek her counsel and discuss issues with her. Do not forget that marriage is a partnership. 4. Prioritise...spend quality time with your wife (and children). Some husbands think that it is acceptable to spend most of their time socialising with their friends, and neglect their wives (and children). If you want to create a true companionship with your wife, you must spend quality time with her, doing things that you both enjoy. 5. Help with household chores. It is not obligatory for wives to cook and clean for their husbands, rather it should be seen as an act of kindness and love on the part of the wife. In many cultures, wives are treated like maids and are expected to clean up after their husbands (and in-laws). Wives are not machines and they also get tired. Help around the house with chores and cooking, to lighten your wife's burden and to show that you do care about her. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to help his wives around the house. Aisha RA said about the Prophet (pbuh): "He was like any other human being: he would clean his clothes, milk his ewe and serve himself." (Reported by Imam Ahmad in al-Musnad) 6. Your wife does not replace you in your duties to your family. Some men expect their wives to look after their parents and family. It is a man's duty to look after his own family, and not burden his wife with additional duties. 7. Be reliable and dependable. It is important for wives to be able to reply on their husbands for issues and even any DIY tasks. Many men will sit around while their wives do the little jobs that they should actually be doing. If your wife cannot reply and depend on you (as the leader of the household) then ask yourself, what is your purpose as her husband? 8. Honesty, openness and trust...with tact. A successful marriage is built on honesty and trust. However, it is important to be tactful. For example, do not call your wife fat, instead invite her to go for a jog with you. Be sensitive to your wife's feelings. 9. Be a man...put your foot down when you need to. Learn to take control of situations when you need to. The role of the man in a marriage is to be a leader, so do not be shy to take this role when needed. 10. Show affection, listen to your wife and flirt. It doesn't matter how many years you have been married, it is important to continue to show your wife affection and love. Even if your wife seems like she doesn't need your love and affection, she certainly does. It is also important to flirt with your wife, as this will make her feel cherished and wanted!
