ICE will now detain pregnant women following Trump's executive order
NEWS: ICE has ended the presumption of release for all pregnant detainees because of Trump exec. order.
Advocates say pregnant women are more likely to miscarry if they are detained than if they are free. This change means more pregnant women will be detainedhttps://www.thedailybeast.com/she-miscarried-while-detained-by-ice-and-they-locked-her-back-up …
I reported on this for years -- ICE is NOT equipped to detain pregnant womenhttps://twitter.com/elisefoley/status/979381555272577025 …
Pregnant women I spoke with in ICE custody often didn't get appropriate nourishment, medical care, or prenatal vitamins. Some were even shackled during childbirth, denied breast pumps, and not allowed to hold their babies.
Important to note that pregnant women sometimes were detained prior to this policy change. (eg, this reporting: https://www.thedailybeast.com/she-miscarried-while-detained-by-ice-and-they-locked-her-back-up …)
ICE was known to detain pregnant women under the Obama administration as wellhttps://twitter.com/CAPAction/status/979384869741584384 …
Advocates say detaining more pregnant women has been a trend under Trump. Here's the story of a 23-year-old pregnant rape survivor, who was repeatedly assaulted by her smuggler on the journey from El Salvador to Texas, then detained for six months: https://www.texasobserver.org/ice-pregnant-rape-survivor-trend-trump/ …https://twitter.com/woodruffbets/status/979381481616429058 …
This is horrific and inhumane. But to be clear, ICE has already been detaining pregnant women, including of hundreds of them in 2017. http://kuow.org/post/her-miscarriage-ice-detention-raises-questions-about-care …https://twitter.com/woodruffbets/status/979381481616429058 …
