The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

Polish photographer Wojciech Ryzinski, who has spent much of his adult life in Ireland, visited Malaga, Spain to compare how the two Catholic countries celebrate Easter Holy Week. The 37-year-old captured the elaborate conical hats and sweeping robes worn by pious marchers during the Semana Santa celebrations over two years, once in 2014 and again in 2015.

Holy Week
Holy Week (Latin: Hebdomas Sancta or Hebdomas Maior, "Greater Week"; Greek: Ἁγία καὶ Μεγάλη Ἑβδομάς, Hagia kai Megale Hebdomas, "Holy and Great Week") in Christianity is the week just before Easter. In the west, it is also the last week of Lent, and includes Palm Sunday, Holy Wednesday (Spy Wednesday), Maundy Thursday (Holy Thursday), Good Friday (Holy Friday), and Holy Saturday. It does not include Easter Sunday, although traditions observing the Easter Triduum may overlap or displace part of Holy Week or Easter itself within that additional liturgical period.
History
Holy Week in the Christian year is the week immediately before Easter. The earliest allusion to the custom of marking this week as a whole with special observances is to be found in the Apostolical Constitutions (v. 18, 19), dating from the latter half of the 3rd century and 4th century. In this text, abstinence from flesh is commanded for all the days, while for the Friday and Sunday an absolute fast is commanded. Dionysius Alexandrinus in his canonical epistle (AD 260), refers to the 91 fasting days implying that the observance of them had already become an established usage in his time.

Sacred
Sacred means revered due to sanctity, is in general the state of being holy (perceived by religious individuals as associated with divinity) or sacred (considered worthy of spiritual respect or devotion; or inspiring awe or reverence among believers).

Week
A week is a time unit equal to seven days. It is the standard time period used for cycles of work days and rest days in most parts of the world, mostly alongside (but not strictly part of) the Gregorian calendar.
The days of the week were named in different languages after classical planets, various deities (example: Thursday – Thor's day, a variation after Jupiter's day from Roman times) and heavenly bodies (example: Sunday – Sun's day) and other sources. In English, the names are Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
ISO 8601 includes the ISO week date system, a numbering system for weeks within a given year – each week begins on a Monday and is associated with the year that contains that week's Thursday (so that if a year starts in a long weekend Friday–Sunday, week number one of the year will start after that).
The term "week" is sometimes expanded to refer to other time units comprising a few days, such as the nundinal cycle of the ancient Roman calendar.

Stabat Mater
Stabat Mater Dolorosa, often referred to as Stabat Mater, is a 13th-century Catholic hymn to Mary, variously attributed to the Franciscan Jacopone da Todi and to Innocent III. It is about the Sorrows of Mary.
The title of the sorrowful hymn is an incipit of the first line, Stabat mater dolorosa ("The sorrowful mother stood"). The Stabat Mater hymn, one of the most powerful and immediate of extant medieval poems, meditates on the suffering of Mary, Jesus Christ's mother, during his crucifixion. It is sung at the liturgy on the memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Stabat Mater has been set to music by many composers, with the most famous settings being those by Palestrina (~1590), Domenico Scarlatti (1715), Alessandro Scarlatti (1723), Pergolesi (1736), Vivaldi (~1727), J.S.Bach (1748), Haydn (1767), Rossini (1832/42), Dvořák (1877), George Henschel, Karol Szymanowski (1925/26), Poulenc (195/51), Toivo Kuula and Arvo Pärt (1985).

When Cam McDermid, Tom Brownlee, Pat Greene and Tori Beattie put together a last-minute trip to Japan at the end of an unseasonably dry Japanuary, they did so with minimal planning. Arriving in Hakuba on the 15th of January to bare rice paddies, dry roads, and the worst start to winter in over 50 years, they waited. Patience was rewarded when the floodgates blew open and Hakuba’s unique coastal position delivered a 2 metre overnight insta-base. Every action immediately became a means to a simple end: getting as pitted as possible and having all the fun doing it. When it snows 3 metres in a week that’s a simple task. The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

And they mocked Him, and cursed Him with their mouths
And told Him to "come down" if He was God.
And my heart broke in my chest when I heard Him say
"Forgive them, it is finished"
And I remember in the garden when He sweat like drops of blood
And how he begged the Father just to let Him pass the cup
And I can still feel the anguish when they pierced Him in the side
And how the ground beneath us shook upon the very moment that He died
Three days later we found an empty grave
and the stone was rolled away where He had been
Tears of joy streamed down my face for the angel said
"Oh fear not, He is risen"

Polish photographer Wojciech Ryzinski, who has spent much of his adult life in Ireland, visited Malaga, Spain to compare how the two Catholic countries celebrate Easter Holy Week. The 37-year-old captured the elaborate conical hats and sweeping robes worn by pious marchers during the Semana Santa celebrations over two years, once in 2014 and again in 2015.

When Cam McDermid, Tom Brownlee, Pat Greene and Tori Beattie put together a last-minute trip to Japan at the end of an unseasonably dry Japanuary, they did so with minimal planning. Arriving in Hakuba on the 15th of January to bare rice paddies, dry roads, and the worst start to winter in over 50 years, they waited.
Patience was rewarded when the floodgates blew open and Hakuba’s unique coastal position delivered a 2 metre overnight insta-base. Every action immediately became a means to a simple end: getting as pitted as possible and having all the fun doing it. When it snows 3 metres in a week that’s a simple task.
Holy Gozaimasu is a collection of the stories and faces that made those 2 weeks feel like a lifetime. None of it would have been possible without the generosity of the Kamoshika Views guesthouse in Hakuba, for providing the friendliest accommodation imaginable and the use of Japan’s greatest tiny, rusted, moustachioed van. www.skilodgehakuba.com

For one week during the month of September, 22 Jeep JK Wranglers from around the country and from as far as Canada, gathered in the state of Colorado to traverse almost 1,000 miles though the breathtaking Rocky's, explore famous historic mining towns and, take on some of the most challenging off-road trails that can be found anywhere. This is the Off Road Evolution JK Experience Rocky Mountain Run, presented by Falken Tire, and this is the story of the Jeepers who came looking for an adventure and found what it means to "KEEP IT TIGHT".
Episode 1 of this 4 part series highlights our gathering in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, the starting point of our JK-Experience, and then heads high up into the White River National Forest where we got to run one the most famous and hardcore trails in the state, Holy Cross! Surrounded by Wilderness, Holy Cross is a gorgeous trail that takes you out to the old ghost town that gives this trail its name and features challenging obstacles such as French Creek. After a fun day of rock crawling over wet boulders, breaking out the winch a few times and seeing some amazing sites, we headed down to the historic town of Leadville which served as our home for the night.

The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

And they mocked Him, and cursed Him with their mouths
And told Him to "come down" if He was God.
And my heart broke in my chest when I heard Him say
"Forgive them, it is finished"
And I remember in the garden when He sweat like drops of blood
And how he begged the Father just to let Him pass the cup
And I can still feel the anguish when they pierced Him in the side
And how the ground beneath us shook upon the very moment that He died
Three days later we found an empty grave
and the stone was rolled away where He had been
Tears of joy streamed down my face for the angel said
"Oh fear not, He is risen"

Polish photographer Wojciech Ryzinski, who has spent much of his adult life in Ireland, visited Malaga, Spain to compare how the two Catholic countries celebrate Easter Holy Week. The 37-year-old captured the elaborate conical hats and sweeping robes worn by pious marchers during the Semana Santa celebrations over two years, once in 2014 and again in 2015.

When Cam McDermid, Tom Brownlee, Pat Greene and Tori Beattie put together a last-minute trip to Japan at the end of an unseasonably dry Japanuary, they did so with minimal planning. Arriving in Hakuba on the 15th of January to bare rice paddies, dry roads, and the worst start to winter in over 50 years, they waited.
Patience was rewarded when the floodgates blew open and Hakuba’s unique coastal position delivered a 2 metre overnight insta-base. Every action immediately became a means to a simple end: getting as pitted as possible and having all the fun doing it. When it snows 3 metres in a week that’s a simple task.
Holy Gozaimasu is a collection of the stories and faces that made those 2 weeks feel like a lifetime. None of it would have been possible without the generosity of the Kamoshika Views guesthouse in Hakuba, for providing the friendliest accommodation imaginable and the use of Japan’s greatest tiny, rusted, moustachioed van. www.skilodgehakuba.com

For one week during the month of September, 22 Jeep JK Wranglers from around the country and from as far as Canada, gathered in the state of Colorado to traverse almost 1,000 miles though the breathtaking Rocky's, explore famous historic mining towns and, take on some of the most challenging off-road trails that can be found anywhere. This is the Off Road Evolution JK Experience Rocky Mountain Run, presented by Falken Tire, and this is the story of the Jeepers who came looking for an adventure and found what it means to "KEEP IT TIGHT".
Episode 1 of this 4 part series highlights our gathering in Glenwood Springs, Colorado, the starting point of our JK-Experience, and then heads high up into the White River National Forest where we got to run one the most famous and hardcore trails in the state, Holy Cross! Surrounded by Wilderness, Holy Cross is a gorgeous trail that takes you out to the old ghost town that gives this trail its name and features challenging obstacles such as French Creek. After a fun day of rock crawling over wet boulders, breaking out the winch a few times and seeing some amazing sites, we headed down to the historic town of Leadville which served as our home for the night.

The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.

The liturgy and events of Holy Week lie behind some of the most inspired and powerful works in the entire repertoire. By now churches are sombre and bare, statues having been covered up, the altars set to be stripped after the Maundy Thursday service – and so much of the music is correspondingly meditative and sombre. Conversely, faced with depicting the events of the Passion story itself, Bach produced some of the most movingly dramatic music ever written; monuments of the repertoire, Bach’s Passions seem a good place to start.
Stabat Mater Dolorosa is considered one of the seven greatest Latin hymns of all time. It is based upon the prophecy of Simeon that a sword was to pierce the heart of His mother, Mary (Lk 2:35). The hymn originated in the 13th century during the peak of Franciscan devotion to the crucified Jesus and has been attributed to Pope Innocent III (d. 1216), St. Bonaventure, or more commonly, Jacopone da Todi (1230-1306), who is considered by most to be the real author. The hymn is often associated with the Stations of the Cross. In 1727 it was prescribed as a Sequence for the Mass of the Seven Sorrows of Mary (September 15) where it is still used today. In addition to this Mass, the hymn is also used for the Office of the Readings, Lauds, and Vespers for this memorial. There is a mirror image to this hymn, Stabat Mater speciosa, which echoes the joy of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the birth of Jesus.
There can be few more evocative words in music than ‘passion’. As well as its familiar English definition, in a musical context it also suggests the commemoration of that most emotive Christian story, the journey of Jesus to the cross. The word has also come to be all but synonymous in music with its two greatest exemplars: the St. John and St. Matthew Passions of Johann Sebastian Bach.
