Kaoma

Kaoma is a French-Brazilian pop group made up of former members of the band Touré Kunda: Chyco Dru (bassist), Jacky Arconte (guitarist), Jean-Claude Bonaventure (producer and keyboardist), Michel Abihssira (drums and percussion), Fania (vocals), and Loalwa Braz (lead singer), Chico and Roberta (dancers). Chyco Dru is from Martinique, Jacky Arconte from Guadeloupe, and Loalwa Braz from Brazil. They are best known for their 1989 hit single, "Lambada".

Career

In 1989, they had a major chart-topping hit with their dance music single "Lambada," a direct cover of Brazilian singer-songwriter Márcia Ferreira's 1986 dance hit "Chorando se foi," which itself was a legally authorized Portuguese-translated rendition of the original 1981 slow ballad, "Llorando se fue" by the Bolivian group Los Kjarkas. Given Kaoma's clear act of plagiarism and release of their single without Los Kjarkas' permission, Los Kjarkas successfully sued. "Dançando Lambada" and "Mélodie d'amour" were the next two singles and were also hit singles, although they failed to earn the same success as "Lambada". "Lambada" peaked at number 46 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It reached number 4 in the UK Singles Chart.

Lambada

Lambada ( pronunciation ) is a dance from Pará, Brazil. Lambada is an Afro-Brazilian dance authentic to people of Black/African descent who brought much of their music and dance culture with them into Brazil upon arrival into the country during the Transatlantic Slave Trade. The Afro-Brazilian dance became internationally popular in the 1980s, especially in Latin America and Caribbean countries. It has adopted aspects of dances such as forró, salsa, merengue, maxixe and the carimbó.

Lambada is generally a partner dance. The dancers generally dance with arched legs, with the steps being from side to side, turning or even swaying, and in its original form never front to back, with a pronounced movement of the hips. At the time when the dance became popular, short skirts for women were in fashion and men wore long trousers, and the dance has become associated with such clothing, especially for women wearing short skirts that swirl up when the woman spins around, typically revealing 90s-style thong underwear.

Tago Mago

Tago Mago is the third album by the German krautrock band Can, and was originally released as a double LP in 1971 by United Artists. It was the band's second studio album and the first to feature Kenji "Damo" Suzuki after their previous vocalist, Malcolm Mooney, quit the band in 1970 to return to the United States.

Tago Mago has been described as Can's most extreme record in terms of sound and structure. The album has received much critical acclaim since its release and has been cited as an influence by various artists.

Recording and production

After Malcolm Mooney left Can in 1970 (according to some rumors, as a result of a nervous breakdown), the remaining members were left without a vocalist. Bassist Holger Czukay happened to meet Kenji "Damo" Suzuki when the latter was busking outside a cafe in Munich. He introduced himself as a member of an experimental rock band and invited Suzuki to join them. That evening, Suzuki performed with the band at the "Blow Up club" and subsequently became a member of Can.

Dançando Lambada

"Dançando Lambada" is a song by French-Brazilian group Kaoma with the Brazilian vocalist Loalwa Braz. It was the second single from Kaoma's debut album Worldbeat and followed the smash worldwide hit "Lambada". Released in October 1989, it achieved success, peaking at #4 in France, #6 in Switzerland and #11 in Ireland, but was unable to duplicate the success of the band's previous hit single. A dub version of "Lambada" was available on the 12" and CD maxi.

Chico and Roberta was a Brazilian song and dance duo founded in 1989.

Biography

The duo consisted of two Brazilian children: Washington "Chico" Oliveira, also known by the names Uoston, Voston, and Chico (born on February 20, 1977 in Eunápolis), and Roberta de Brito (born on April 27, 1979 in Brasília). The duo first appeared in the videoclip "Lambada" by the French-Brazilian group Kaoma in 1989. Both Kaoma and Chico and Roberta had the same producer, Jean-Claude Bonaventure, and the duo's songs were composed by Kaoma's lead singer Loalwa Braz, with contributions by Daniel Darras, Alan Pype, Bonaventure, M. Nogueira, and Roberta and Chico themselves.

At the end of 1990, Chico and Roberta had their first success with the album Frente a Frente (Face to Face), which was certified gold by the French certification group SNEP and contained their first two singles, "Frente a Frente" and "Esperança do Natal" (a Christmas song). These singles were listed at the top of the French SNEP singles charts for several weeks, and sold approximately 322,000 and 228,000 copies, respectively.
