Overview

Develop the foundational skills to access an apprenticeship in furniture finishing, with a Certificate II in Furniture Finishing at Victoria University Polytechnic.

In this practical pre-apprenticeship course, you'll learn how to:

  • prepare surfaces
  • mix and apply stains
  • apply finishing material by hand and spray gun
  • restore furnishing items
  • operate a range of furniture finishing equipment
  • cost furniture finishing jobs.

This course also covers workplace safety and environmentally sustainable work practices. You’ll learn how to work safely with hazardous substances and dangerous goods.

When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to gain employment as a furniture-finishing apprentice.

Careers in furniture finishing

Furniture finishing requires technical skills, organisational skills and craftsmanship. This pre-apprenticeship from Victoria University Polytechnic can help you get your foot in the door of the furnishing industry.

It will give you the skills and knowledge to apply for an apprenticeship and start your career. Employers often prefer apprentice applicants that have undertaken a pre-apprenticeship.

  • assistant furniture finisher
  • plywood and veneer repairer
  • wood-processing machine operator.

This course is nationally recognised training.

Course structure

To be awarded MSF20213 Certificate II in Furniture Finishing, a student must complete a total of thirteen (13) units of competency, consisting of:

  • eight (8) core units, and;

  • five (5) elective units, of which:

  • a minimum of three (3) units must be selected from the MSF20213 Certificate II in Furniture Finishing qualification, and;
  • a maximum of two (2) units may be selected from any other endorsed training package and/or accredited course that is aligned at Certificate II or III level as well as be approved by the Polytechnic.

This qualification describes the skills and knowledge required to perform a range of finishing techniques for furniture and covers basic dismantling and assembly of furniture items for surface finishing involving known routines and procedures and some accountability for the quality of outcomes. It involves collaboration with others through members of a group or team.

What's a unit?

A unit or 'subject' is the actual class you'll attend in the process of completing a course.

Most courses have a mixture of compulsory 'core' units that you need to take, and optional \'elective\' units that you can choose to take based on your area of interest, expertise or experience.

The amount you pay for your course depends on whether you’re offered a government subsidised place or a full-fee paying place.

If you enrol in a:

  • Government subsidised place, you’ll pay a VET tuition fee and may be required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee and course materials contribution.
  • full-fee paying place, you’ll pay the full-fee tuition rate (which includes Student Services and Amenities Fee and any material fees).

You may be able to complete your qualification sooner through formal recognition of your existing skills. This is known as Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL).

To receive RPL, we assess your previous work, education and life experiences against recognised qualifications. Applications for RPL can be made prior to enrolling.
