In February 2014, letter bombs were sent to nine British Military recruitment offices over the course of three days. Londonderry postmarks, a coded message sent to a Northern Irish newspaper, and security forces at Downing Street all pointed to the New IRA as the main suspects.
Last Summer, VICE News visited Derry and heard from Gary Donnelly - the most prominent dissident republican in Londonderry, accused of leading operations for the Real IRA - that these attacks on Britain were to be expected as part of "strategic attacks on high profile targets," as "it's England that's occupying Ireland."
In 'Free Derry: The IRA Drug War', VICE News investigate how, sixteen years after the Good Friday peace agreement and on the eve of the first major loyalist parade through the city in four years, dissident republican activity in Derry is increasing thanks to the merger of the Real IRA with anti-drugs vigilantes.
VICE News reporter Alex Miller speaks to members of the Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), who formed the coalition with the Real IRA, and meets supporters as young as thirteen who are being armed with petrol bombs to combat criminal gangs and intervening police.
For the first time, Paul Stewart, a close friend of slain Dublin Real IRA leader Alan Ryan, speaks on camera about witnessing the murder, as well as sharing insights on Ryan's war against drug dealers.
Miller also interviews the mother of Andrew Smith, a man who she says was murdered by the Real IRA despite no affiliation with drugs related crime, before hearing from a Derry ex-drug dealer who now claims that, if the New IRA didn't fight drugs, "this town would be filled with ecstasy and rat poison and kids would be dying."
VICE encounter a city where kneecappings and shootings are rife, walls are branded with anti-UK slogans, and where a policeman can scarcely walk down the street - according to Gary Donnelly - "without being killed".
In "Free Derry: The IRA Drug War", VICE unmask the farcical veneer of the UK's 'City of Culture' 2013.

Derry (/ˈdɛrɪ/), officially Londonderry (/ˈlʌndənˌdɛrɪ/), is the second-largest city in Northern Ireland and the fourth-largest city on the island of Ireland. The name Derry is an anglicisation of the Irish name Daire or Doire meaning "oak grove". In 1613, the city was granted a Royal Charter by King James I and gained the "London" prefix to reflect the funding of its construction by the London guilds. While the city is more usually known colloquially as Derry, Londonderry is also commonly used and remains the legal name.
The old walled city lies on the west bank of the River Foyle, which is spanned by two road bridges and one footbridge. The city now covers both banks (Cityside on the west and Waterside on the east). The city district also extends to rural areas to the southeast. The population of the city proper (the area defined by its 17th century charter) was 83,652 in the 2001 Census, while the Derry Urban Area had a population of 90,736. The district is administered by Derry City & Strabane District Council and contains both Londonderry Port and City of Derry Airport.

Real Irish Republican Army
The Real Irish Republican Army or Real IRA, also referred to as the New IRA, is an Irish republican paramilitary organisation which aims to bring about a united Ireland. It formed in 1997 following a split in the Provisional IRA, which had declared a ceasefire that year. Like the Provisional IRA before it, the RIRA sees itself as the only rightful successor to the original Irish Republican Army and styles itself as simply "the Irish Republican Army" in English or Óglaigh na hÉireann in Irish. It is an illegal organisation in the Republic of Ireland and designated as a terrorist organisation in the United Kingdom and the United States.
Since its formation the RIRA has waged a campaign in Northern Ireland against the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI)—formerly the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC)—and the British Army. The RIRA is the largest and most active of the "dissident republican" paramilitary groups operating against the British security forces. It has targeted security forces in gun attacks and bombings, as well as with grenades, mortars and rockets. The organisation has also been responsible for a number of bombings in Northern Ireland and England with the goal of causing economic harm and/or disruption. The most notable of these was the 15 August 1998 Omagh bombing, which killed 29 people. After the bombing, the RIRA went on ceasefire, but began operations again in 2000. In March 2009, it claimed responsibility for an attack on Massereene Barracks that killed two British soldiers, the first to be killed in Northern Ireland since 1997.

Free Derry
Free Derry (Irish: Saor Dhoire) was a self-declared autonomous nationalist area of Derry, Northern Ireland, that existed between 1969 and 1972. Its name was taken from a sign painted on a gable wall in the Bogside in January 1969 which read, "You are now entering Free Derry". The area, which included the Bogside and Creggan neighbourhoods, was secured by community activists for the first time on 5 January 1969 following an incursion into the Bogside by members of the Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC). Residents built barricades and carried clubs and similar arms to prevent the RUC from entering. After six days the residents took down the barricades and RUC patrols resumed, but tensions remained high over the following months.
Violence reached a peak on 12 August 1969, culminating in the Battle of the Bogside—a three-day pitched battle between residents and the RUC. On 14 August units of the British Army were deployed at the edge of the Bogside and the RUC were withdrawn. The Derry Citizens Defence Association (DCDA) declared their intention to hold the area against both the RUC and the British Army until their demands were met. The British Army made no attempt to enter the area. The situation continued until October 1969 when, following publication of the Hunt Report, military police were allowed in.

Last Summer, VICE News visited Derry and heard from Gary Donnelly - the most prominent dissident republican in Londonderry, accused of leading operations for the Real IRA - that these attacks on Britain were to be expected as part of "strategic attacks on high profile targets," as "it's England that's occupying Ireland."
In 'Free Derry: The IRA Drug War', VICE News investigate how, sixteen years after the Good Friday peace agreement and on the eve of the first major loyalist parade through the city in four years, dissident republican activity in Derry is increasing thanks to the merger of the Real IRA with anti-drugs vigilantes.
VICE News reporter Alex Miller speaks to members of the Republican Action Against Drugs (RAAD), who formed the coalition with the Real IRA, and meets supporters as young as thirteen who are being armed with petrol bombs to combat criminal gangs and intervening police.
For the first time, Paul Stewart, a close friend of slain Dublin Real IRA leader Alan Ryan, speaks on camera about witnessing the murder, as well as sharing insights on Ryan's war against drug dealers.
Miller also interviews the mother of Andrew Smith, a man who she says was murdered by the Real IRA despite no affiliation with drugs related crime, before hearing from a Derry ex-drug dealer who now claims that, if the New IRA didn't fight drugs, "this town would be filled with ecstasy and rat poison and kids would be dying."
VICE encounter a city where kneecappings and shootings are rife, walls are branded with anti-UK slogans, and where a policeman can scarcely walk down the street - according to Gary Donnelly - "without being killed".
In "Free Derry: The IRA Drug War", VICE unmask the farcical veneer of the UK's 'City of Culture' 2013.

They start off in Derry (or Londonderry to some) which one of the last walled cities in Europe and a University city. Within it they show us some hidden gems such as the Derry Craft Village.
From Derry they take the cycle track that leads all the way to Donegal along the River Boyle. They travel to Kinnoge Bay withs its golden sand and try out horse riding on the beach before ending up in the most northerly point in Ireland - Malin Head.

Mussenden Temple sightseeing reveals a building inspired by the Temple of Vesta in Italy. It is said that in 1777, the Bishop of Derry tried to purchase the Temple of Vesta and have it transported to Ireland, but his efforts were rebuffed. As a result, he built Mussenden Temple, which now stands watch over the cliffs and the roiling blue sea below.

Finally, I had time to create this video of my trip to Derry, Northern Ireland last August. As you can tell by watching it, I was most impressed by the unstoppable rain, the beautiful flowers and the green landscape. But also by how nice the local people were! I visited the Giant's Causeway and wow... it's one of those places you need to see in your lifetime.

There's only one fitting way to describe these ancient pilgrimage routes running across Europe - and that is 'heavenly'.Acclaimed landscape photographer Derry Brabbs from Harrogate, Yorkshire, went about capturing the walking trails on foot and his stunning images take you through fields, over mountain ridges and inside magical churches.In total there are ten epic rambles covered in his new tome Pilgrimage - The Great Pilgrim Routes of Britain and Europe, including St Cuthbert's Way - a 62-mile route along the Scottish borders from Melrose Abbey to Holy Island - and Via Podiensis - a 460-mile traverse across France from Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.The Camino France, starting at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in south western France and finishing at Santiago de Compostela in Spain’s Galicia region, is one of the tougher hikes with the 484-mile crossing taking the best part of a month to complete.The Via De La Plata, zigzagging from Seville to Astorga, is equally as tough, covering a total of 460 miles.Brabbs told MailOnline Travel he didn't have time to complete the routes with his publishing deadline looming.Before setting off to various locations, he said he had to do 'a lot of intense research' in order to capture the most important architectural and landscape features of each journey into the limited number of pages allocated to each chapter.The avid traveller added: 'There were several times when I wondered whether I had bitten off more than I could chew but an exhausting combination of train stations, airports, car rental desks and walking boots got me over the finishing line in time.'Pilgrimage in Europe is thriving on a massive scale and Brabbs says the 'solitude of days or weeks on the road can have a surprisingly profound effect on those accustomed to city life and 24-hour technology'.In 1990 the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela recorded less than 5,000 pilgrims: today that figure is at least 200,000 a year.The most notable addition to the rejuvenated era of pilgrimage is the Via Francigena, now a very well established path through Switzerland and Italy.The Italian section begins on the bleak summit of the Great St Bernard Pass where a hospice still caters to the needs of passing pilgrims before heading down to Rome through some of Italy’s most beguiling countryside, which is interspersed with medieval hilltop towns and villages.Brabbs’ previous book, Roads to Santiago, focused exclusively on the 'camino' through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela.But his new addition expands on the theme. There's only one fitting way to describe these ancient pilgrimage routes running across Europe - and that is 'heavenly'.Acclaimed landscape photographer Derry Brabbs from Harrogate, Yorkshire, went about capturing the walking trails on foot and his stunning images take you through fields, over mountain ridges and inside magical churches.In total there are ten epic rambles covered in his new tome Pilgrimage - The Great Pilgrim Routes of Britain and Europe, including St Cuthbert's Way - a 62-mile route along the Scottish borders from Melrose Abbey to Holy Island - and Via Podiensis - a 460-mile traverse across France from Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port.The Camino France, starting at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in south western France and finishing at Santiago de Compostela in Spain’s Galicia region, is one of the tougher hikes with the 484-mile crossing taking the best part of a month to complete.The Via De La Plata, zigzagging from Seville to Astorga, is equally as tough, covering a total of 460 miles.Brabbs told MailOnline Travel he didn't have time to complete the routes with his publishing deadline looming.Before setting off to various locations, he said he had to do 'a lot of intense research' in order to capture the most important architectural and landscape features of each journey into the limited number of pages allocated to each chapter.The avid traveller added: 'There were several times when I wondered whether I had bitten off more than I could chew but an exhausting combination of train stations, airports, car rental desks and walking boots got me over the finishing line in time.'Pilgrimage in Europe is thriving on a massive scale and Brabbs says the 'solitude of days or weeks on the road can have a surprisingly profound effect on those accustomed to city life and 24-hour technology'.In 1990 the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela recorded less than 5,000 pilgrims: today that figure is at least 200,000 a year.The most notable addition to the rejuvenated era of pilgrimage is the Via Francigena, now a very well established path through Switzerland and Italy.The Italian section begins on the bleak summit of the Great St Bernard Pass where a hospice still caters to the needs of passing pilgrims before heading down to Rome through some of Italy’s most beguiling countryside, which is interspersed with medieval hilltop towns and villages.Brabbs’ previous book, Roads to Santiago, focused exclusively on the 'camino' through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela.But his new addition expands on the theme.
