The Matsu Islands (Chinese: 馬祖列島; pinyin: Mǎzǔ Lièdǎo; Fuzhou dialect: Mā-cū liĕk-dō̤ or less frequently, Chinese: 馬祖群島; pinyin: Mǎzǔ Qúndǎo; Fuzhou dialect: 馬祖島 Mā-cū-dō̤) are a minor archipelago of 36 islands and islets in the Taiwan Strait administered as Lienchiang County (連江縣; Lièng-gŏng-gâing pinyin: Liánjiāng Xiàn;) under streamlined Fujian Province of Taiwan. It is the smallest county in the country.
Only a small area of what is historically Lienchiang County is under the control of the Republic of China. The People's Republic of China (PRC) administers the part of the historical county on mainland China as Lianjiang County, which claims the entire archipelago to be its Mazu Township (馬祖鄉; Mā-cū-hiŏng). Kinmen is the other archipelago along the coast of Fujian that is controlled by the Republic of China (Taiwan).
The Matsu Islands are named for the goddess Matsu.
The Lienchiang name is derived from the original Lianjiang County of Fujian province in Mainland China. In April 2003, the county government started considering changing the name to Matsu County to avoid confusion with the county of the same name on the mainland. Some local people opposed the name change because they felt it reflected a Democratic Progressive Party Taiwan Independence viewpoint.
Matsu may refer to:
The Voice of Free China (Chinese: 自由中國之聲; pinyin: Zìyóu Zhōngguó Zhīshēng) was the international broadcasting station of the Republic of China from 1949 until 1998. During the Cold War era the station was the source of Chinese Nationalist propaganda largely aimed at discrediting the People's Republic of China and buttressing the Nationalists' claims to be the sole legitimate government of all of China.
The Voice of Free China, for many years, was owned by the Broadcasting Corporation of China. This was a private company under a government contract to provide public radio programming. The BCC still exists today, but in 1998 the Voice of Free China and the government-owned Central Broadcasting System merged.
With the easing of cross-strait relations and the liberalization of Taiwan's government, the Voice of Free China changed its name to Radio Taipei International in 1998 and also used the name "Voice of Asia" for some broadcasts. In 2003 it became Radio Taiwan International reflecting the defeat of the Kuomintang government in 2000 and the new government's orientation towards Taiwan independence from China. Today, this station is now known as Radio Taiwan International.
The term "Free China" may mean:

Taiwan (i/ˌtaɪˈwɑːn/; Chinese: 臺灣 or 台灣; see below), officially the Republic of China (ROC; Chinese: 中華民國; pinyin: Zhōnghuá Mínguó), is a sovereign state in East Asia. The Republic of China, originally based in mainland China, now governs the island of Taiwan, which constitutes more than 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu, Kinmen, Matsu, and other minor islands, following its loss of the mainland China territory in 1949 in the Chinese Civil War. This remaining area is also constitutionally called the "Free area of the Republic of China" which is not ruled by the Communist Party of China in Beijing.
Neighboring states include the People's Republic of China (PRC) to the west (mainland China), Japan to the east and northeast, and the Philippines to the south. Taiwan is one of the most densely populated countries in the world with a population density of 649 people per km2 in October 2015.Taipei is the seat of the central government, and together with the surrounding cities of New Taipei and Keelung forms the largest metropolitan area on the island.

And next we take you to a remote island off of Taiwan called Matsu. This military island is the northern-most territory of the Republic of China. Due to its isolation, it preserves some magnificent things rarely seen by the public. NTD's Kevin Lin brings us there. This more than a century old building belongs to the Treasury of ROC, and it is rarely seen by the public due to its isolation. At this expedition, not only we will uncover this mysterious island, we'll also try to get a glance on the conditions of current Chinese Nationalist (Taiwan) army here on the island. Matsu consists of a chain of islands which is right next to Fujian Province of China. During the tight tension across the Strait, soldiers who have been randomly selected to serve on the islands. The reward is quite...

I've been thinking about where to take yuh since it seems I've been all over as far as and as much as the MRT (Subway/Metro in Taiwan) can take me. Then I thought, HEYYYY WHY HAVE I NOT VISITED THE TEMPLE?!!! Well I haven't because I'm Christian but visiting and praying at the temple is indeed part of the Taiwanese people's lives. Most of the Taiwanese people believe in Taoism/Daoism which people tend to confuse with Buddhism. Taoism, however; is very different from Buddhism because the Taoist don't worship the buddhas but multiple different Gods that are based on the Chinese teachings and philosophies. The Taoists operate on the three virtues of compassion, moderation, and humility. Too much religions for you? Well how about just simply visiting for the pleasure of being a tourist and se...

http://www.TravelsWithSheila.com Matsu, also known as Mazu, is dedicated to the Chinese goddess of the sea who is said to protect fishermen and sailors. This flamboyantly decorated Taoist temple is divided into three halls and two courtyards. Filled at all hours with people burning incense and joss sticks to the gods and trying to divine the future, the Lukang temple is one of the most important in Taiwan. There is even a Matsu pilgrimage yearly during which a statue of Matsu is carried 350 kilometers/217 miles around the island over an eight-day period! Can you just imagine that sight?
