Seattle is ruled by capital, but throughout history social movements have imposed limits on its rule. This walking tour of Seattle's pan-Asian neighborhood, the International District, will visit some of the many sites of capitalist development, state violence and social movement activity over 150 years that have made the neighborhood what it is today, for better and for worse: anti-Chinese riots, Japanese internment, Filipino American labor radicalism, urban renewal and anti-gentrification battles, and more.
This walking tour is part of the Institute for Social Ecology Summer Intensive. Suggested donation of $10.

The Rojava Revolution: Building Radical Democracy in Syria
Lecture by Saladdin Ahmed
Seattle University: Wycoff Auditorium, 2nd floor Engineering Building
...Is it true that there is no alternative to the existing hierarchical world, or do we simply choose not to perceive alternatives? Is it true that inclusive social egalitarianism is an unrealizable utopia, or do we just prefer to perpetuate the conditions of a reality that renders imagination impossible? This talk will examine the current revolution in Rojava, the Kurdish region of Northern Syria, as an unprecedented political alternative that offers a new model for a radically egalitarian and democratic model. We will discuss the history of the Rojava liberation movement, its radical feminist, democratic, and cosmopolitan political vision, and what North American movements can learn from their inspiring example.
This public lecture is part of the Institute for Social Ecology's 2018 Summer Intensive, full program and more details here: http://social-ecology.org/…/social-ecology-summer-intensiv…/. Co-sponsored by the Autonomous Collective of Seattle University.
