Phish is an American rock and roll band noted for their musical improvisation, extended jams, blending of musical genres, and dedicated fan base. Formed at the University of Vermont in 1983 (with the current line-up solidifying in 1985), the band's four members—Trey Anastasio (guitars, lead vocals), Mike Gordon (bass, vocals), Jon Fishman (drums, percussion, vacuum, vocals), and Page McConnell (keyboards, vocals)—performed together for nearly 20 years before going on hiatus in August 2004. They reunited in March 2009 for a series of three consecutive concerts played in the Hampton Coliseum in Hampton, Virginia, and have since resumed performing regularly.
Phish's music blends elements of a wide variety of genres, including including funk, progressive rock, psychedelic rock, folk, country, jazz, blues, bluegrass and pop. Although the band has received little radio play or mainstream exposure, Phish has developed a large and dedicated following by word of mouth, the exchange of live recordings, and selling over 8 million albums and DVDs in the United States.Rolling Stone stated that the band helped to "...spawn a new wave of bands oriented around group improvisation and super-extended grooves". They remain a very popular and successful touring act.

Trey Anastasio goes over his Phish touring rig.
Trey Anastasio is still jamming for his adoring fans after three decades on the road. Recently, the Phish front man has taken his talents to the classical music stage, to great acclaim. Now, one of the largest and most loyal fan bases in rock 'n' roll can hear another side of their favorite rocker. Jeffrey Brown caught up with Anastasio at the Kennedy Center, where the musician performed with the National Symphony. Watch their complete conversation above.

An extended interview with Phish frontman Trey Anastasio airs this weekend on WCAX. Anthony Mason talks to Trey on CBS Sunday Morning and asks him what it's like to be in a band that has no peers.
On a recent trip out to visit Phish lyricist Tom Marshall where I was interviewed on his podcast "Under the Scales," Tom played tour guide and took me to phishtorical spots like the Rhombus where he and Trey Anastasio wrote "Divided Sky." Tom also references two other songs, "Guy Forget" and "Girlfriend Named Bubba," the latter of which is on a tape—but has never been heard!
Drummer Jon Fishman is a founding member of the band Phish for 30+ years. Here are a few short soundbites where he shares a little about his background growing up in Syracuse, NY (USA) and about his take on working with the band. (The Dave he periodically refers to is drummer Dave Hanlon, who was a drum teacher of Jon's when he was 13 and living in Syracuse, NY.)
