Namibia (/nəˈmɪbiə/, /næˈ-/), officially the Republic of Namibia (German: Republik Namibia ; Afrikaans: Republiek van Namibië), and formerly German South-West Africa and then South West Africa, is a country in southern Africa whose western border is the Atlantic Ocean. It shares land borders with Zambia and Angola to the north, Botswana to the east and South Africa to the south and east. Although it does not border Zimbabwe, less than 200 metres of the Zambezi River (essentially a small bulge in Botswana to achieve a Botswana/Zambia micro-border) separates them at their closest points. It gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990, following the Namibian War of Independence. Its capital and largest city is Windhoek. Namibia is a member state of the United Nations (UN), the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and the Commonwealth of Nations.
The dry lands of Namibia were inhabited since early times by San, Damara, and Namaqua, and since about the 14th century AD by immigrating Bantu who came with the Bantu expansion. Most of the territory became a German Imperial protectorate in 1884 and remained a German colony until the end of World War I. In 1920, the League of Nations mandated the country to South Africa, which imposed its laws and, from 1948, its apartheid policy. The port of Walvis Bay and the offshore Penguin Islands had been annexed by the Cape Colony under the British crown by 1878 and had become an integral part of the new Union of South Africa at its creation in 1910.

January 2004 The introduction of sweeping land reforms in Namibia is threatening the livelihoods of hundreds of white farmers. Emmanuel Ismael's home is a small farm in the heart of Duerreland, Namibia. Yet he fears that all might soon be lost in the face of President Sam Nujoma's land reclamation programme. With black farmers desperate for land, the Namibian government has adopted a strategy designed to win them votes -- evicting white farmers. 192 foreigners have already lost their farms. But European farmers are worried that only the politicians will profit from the changes. "They are not battling against poverty but are simply changing the colour of the skin of the owners." In fact, the first victims of the land expropriation will be the black workers. Farmers believe that foreign inv...

The Namibian Economy, Past, Present and Future’ Conference was hosted by the Economic Association of Namibia on 10 November 2016, at the Safari Hotel. It attracted economists, politicians and foreign investors far and wide... The Conference was meant to to review our current, tumultuous economic environment. Since the mid-term budget announcement, everyone has felt the pinch. Government tightened its coffers, tenders were frozen, food prices rose and workers were retrenched. With little change predicted on our medium term forecast for economic growth, investment will be the key driver to save our economy... from a plummeting currency and hyper- inflation. Since then, President Geingob has been travelling the world to meet with potential investors in places like Cuba, France and London. It ...

This documentary “Maternity waiting homes in Namibia: Hope for the future” focuses on one of the core components of PARMaCM, the importance of keeping pregnant women and young mothers safe via the construction of maternity waiting homes in Namibia. The movie is the product of concerted efforts of the Namibian TV Production Company Quiet Storm and the three PARMaCM stakeholders, the Ministry of Health and Social Services (MoHSS), the European Union (EU) and the World Health Organization (WHO). PARMaCM stands for “The Programme for Accelerating the Reduction of Maternal and Child Mortality” and its objective is to accelerate the achievement of MDGs 4 and 5 of reducing child mortality and improving maternal health in Namibia.
Seven countries in Southern Africa are modelling how to deliver integrated SRHR-HIV services in order to improve uptake. This is Namibia's story. The SRH-HIV Linkages programme aims to link HIV prevention, treatment and care with Sexual Reproductive Health Services. While this may appear logical, it is not the way public health clinics are currently organized in these countries. The programme is about making small subtle changes in health care delivery that have a big impact on the lives of ordinary people. It uses the opportunity to provide comprehensive services to any client who seeks health services at the clinics. If they seek HIV testing, they are also offered family planning, antenatal services, cervical cancer and TB screening, and more. The results suggest that the project has ...
The health status of Namibia has increased steadily since the 1950s, and the government does have focus on health in the country and seek to make health service upgrades, fx. by introducing Universal Health Coverage in the years to come As a guidance to achieve this goal, The Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) and World Health Organization (WHO) recently published the report "Namibia: State of the Nation's Health: Findings from the Global Burden of Disease. The report backs the fact that Namibia has made steadily progress in the last decades when it comes to general health and communicable diseases, but despite this progress, HIV/AIDS still is one of the big reasons for health loss in the country. Pentagon Breaks ‘Bombastic’ Military Record: “This Is A New War” Source: https://goo.gl/UTDHsj America has learned that we are either in a war to win it, or we should get out. There is no substitute for victory. Playing at war simply wastes money and precious lives. War is the most serious business in which a nation can engage. Clearly, we’ve drifted from the Founders’ views of taking precautions before engaging in warfare. As a result, we jump into them too easily. And they are seemingly interminable. President Trump has inherited a number of ongoing wars. People prefer the word “conflict” to “war.” But that does not hide the fact that our armed forces are in combat in numerous hot spots. What is encouraging are signs that the president intends to vigorously prosecute these wars to su...
French/Span/Nat Angolan troops were guarding the strategic Congolese port town of Matadi on Sunday after rebel forces trying to oust President Laurent Kabila deserted their positions. The Angolans took control of Matadi over the weekend after the rebels put up only light resistance before fleeing into the surrounding forest. The loss of Matadi, one of the last major rebel strongholds, is a blow to the insurgent force that just weeks ago seemed poised to take the capital, Kinshasa, about 350 kilometers to the northeast. This is the town of Matadi, just over 350 kilometers south-west of the Congolese capital Kinshasa. After a brief outburst of fighting on Sunday, it's now a government prize. Movie made by Chris Dos Santos as a post graduate student project. BE WARNED: EXCESSIVE SWEARING! (but that is exactly how it was in our army and most probably in any army in the world..) The film was screened at the Cannes film festival and won a few international awards . I think this is quite an achievement for a student film of this scale being produced with a limited budget. It has not been publicly screened in South Africa. Personally in my 2 year SADF experience we did not encounter racial incidents like portrayed in this movie but I can imagine things like this happened in isolated cases. Political talk was forbidden in our unit. We also had much operational inter action with black members of the SADF and no segregation was present. Furthermore we did not experience the an...

In June 1978 it was learnt that SWAPO was preparing to attack the military bases at Katima Mulilo, Wenela and M''pacha. To meet this attack two combat teams viz Alpha and Bravo were formed. The attack started on 23 August with a stand-off bombardment using 122 mm rockets on Katima Mulilo. One of these penetrated the roof of a barrack killing ten soldiers. After an artillery and mortar battle the two combat units crossed the border. Combat team Bravo's target was a SWAPO base camp approximately 30 km from the Zambian border but they found it deserted and returned to M''pacha without having accomplished this objective. Combat Unit Alpha managed to catch up with the rear guard of a number of fleeing terrorists but were enticed into an ambush. In the fighting which ensued five terrorists w...

Bus day tour to Rossing Uranium Mine from Swakopmund in Namibia. Explanation of process of uranium extraction and view over open-cast mine. | Тур на урановую шахту Россинг в Намибии - самую большую урановую шахту в Африке, где добыча ведется открытым способом. Uranium was discovered in the Namib Desert in 1928, but it was not until intensive exploration in the late 1950s that much interest was shown in the area. After discovering numerous uranium occurrences, Rio Tinto secured the rights to the low grade Rössing deposit in 1966. Ten years later, in 1976, Rössing Uranium, Namibia's first commercial uranium mine, began operating. Уран был впервые обнаружен в пустыне Намиб в 1928 году. После интенсивной разведки в 50-х годах и обнаружения многочисленных урановых залежей, компания Рио Тинто ...
Camborne School of Mines MSc Geology visit Navachab Gold, Langer Heinrich Uranium, Walvis Bay Salt, Okorusu Flurospar, Lofdal Rare Earths, Skorpion Zinc and Namdeb Diamond mines.
Diamonds are Namibia's biggest source of income -- but the number of precious stones under the Namib desert is dwindling. Now, diamond mining giant De Beers has developed a pioneering diamond boat, that can pluck the stones from under the Atlantic Ocean.
This video shows the negative consequences of uranium mining for workers and communities in Namibia
Offshore diamond mining is a relatively new science. The process has been refined by diamond producer Debmarine Namibia, which is a joint venture between DeBeers and the government of Namibia. Angelo Coppola spent some time on board one of their vessels 40 kilometers off the Namibian coast. Sulle montagne di erongo insieme ai minatori
In the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Namibia, you will find some of the world’s most valuable diamonds scattered like lost change. The discovery of such gems has sparked a revolution in one of the world’s most storied industries for the precious stones buried just under the seafloor. "Our ground operations are at a turning point. We believe that diamond mining on earth is not finished, but it will require very large investments," said Daniel Kali, De Beers Namibia resident director. Uranium mining companies have been exploring the arid country of Namibia looking to open new mines. Rössing, a Rio Tinto mine has already been operational for more than 30 years. The implications this mine and future operations is explored from the perspective of the communities living nearby. Through this documentary and two reports (http://www.criirad.org/mines-uranium/namibie/uranium-mining-namibia.html), the EJOLT (www.ejolt.org) team working on nuclear energy sheds light on the dangers of uranium mining in Namibia. Two NGOs in Namibia (Earthlife Namibia and LaRRI), a French independent laboratory specialised in radiation (CRIIRAD) and team coordinator Marta Conde (UAB) partnered to produce this remarkable set of action oriented resources. Travel video about destination Namibia. Windhoek is the flourishing capital of Namibia and it is from here that we begin a journey through this country and experience some of the magic of the Dark Continent on a luxurious train - the Desert Express!Dating back to colonial times, the Christ Church is a reminder of the end of hostilities between the Germans and the indigenous population during the period when it was known as ‘German West Africa’, and indeed German influence in this part of the world is still very much in evidence today. A short journey leads into the isolated loneliness of the prairie and to lion feeding at the Okapuka Ranch in which an Austrian keeps lions in their natural environment. A popular holiday resort on the mouth of the River Swakop and the final destination of th...
I fly into Windhoek, the surprisingly modern capital city on Namibia. I wander along Independence Avenue to see the old colonial buildings and a meteorite memorial. Then head up Robert Mugabe Avenue to see the church, the parliament and the independence monument. I finish my tour by wandering the botanical gardens in search of a rock hyrax.

Namibia! A land of enchanting desert beauty. The country of Namibia has a population of 3 million people total and is primarily made up by desert, yet there is no end to the adventures to be had on this laid back, wondrous land. Here are my top 5 tips for traveling in Namibia! NOTE: I spent 5 days in the cities of Walvis Bay and Swakopmund on the Namibian coast, so these tips are centered around those particular destinations. 1) DO NOT WALK AROUND AT NIGHT! Although this is a good rule of thumb when traveling anywhere it is especially true in Namibia. I was personally made a target and was fortunate enough to be in a large enough group of people that thankfully I was not taken. Long story short a group of 5 girls and 1 guy and I were making our way to the ship (walking at night) when a ...

Open this description for the lyrics, so you can sing along! A couple years ago, I discovered a video of a cosplay group who used my MIDI file of the Animaniacs theme for a very funny skit they did at an anime convention ("Anime-niacs"). The following year, having now found me online, they asked if I could make a MIDI file of Yakko's World for a new skit they wanted to do ("The Animes of the World" -- more like of Japan, surely?). So I made this MIDI file for them (actually, the one I made them had a special extended ending for the purposes of their skit). Only recently did I come up with this idea of using the MIDI file to make a karaoke version of Yakko's World, so that folks out there can dub in their own voice tracks. I know you crazy fans are out there! Let's hear it! EDIT: More r...

This has been one of my favorite songs for almost twenty years now. I've always meant to get around to learning it, and I finally sat down and did it. Learning the song took a couple of days, shooting the pictures took about an hour (not counting taping the map together), and putting it all together took about eight hours. Yes, the voice at the beginning is also me. I normally sing bass/baritone, so this is a little high for my range, but doable. Women and girls tend to perform more labor intensive work than men and boys do, such as carrying water to the village, earthen plastering the mopane wood homes with a traditional mixture of red clay soil and cow manure binding agent, collecting firewood, attend to the calabash vines used for producing and ensuring a secure supply of soured milk, cooking and serving meals, as well as artisans making handicrafts, clothing and jewelry. The responsibility for milking the cows and goats also lies with the women and girls. Women and girls take care of the children, and one woman or girl will take care of another woman's children. The men's main task is preoccupied tending to the livestock farming, herding where the men will often be away from the family home for extended periods, animal slaughte...

Produced by Kevin Harris in 1988, "Namibia - no easy road to Freedom" looked at the harsh realities suffered by Namibia's civilian population under a history of colonial occupation and more specifically the brutalisation suffered as a consequence of South African military occupation. As such, the film was a cry for liberation from the shackles of South African military occupation and a call by the people of Namibia for the right to self determination through the implementation of United Nations Resolution 435. The film was seized by the South African Security Police from The Video Lab in Johannesburg during post-production mass-duplication & subsequently banned in an unsuccessful attempt by the South African authorities to prevent international distribution. Namibia achieved independence ...
