Theism

Theism, in the field of comparative religion, is the belief in the existence of deities. In popular parlance, the term theism often describes the classical conception of god(s) that is found in the monotheistic and polytheistic religions.

The term theism derives from the Greek theos meaning "god". The term theism was first used by Ralph Cudworth (1617–88). In Cudworth's definition, they are "strictly and properly called Theists, who affirm, that a perfectly conscious understanding being, or mind, existing of itself from eternity, was the cause of all other things".

Atheism is commonly understood as rejection of theism in the broadest sense of theism, i.e. the rejection of belief in a god or gods. The claim that the existence of any deity is unknown or unknowable is agnosticism.

Types of Theism

Monotheism

Monotheism (from Greek μόνος) is the belief in theology that only one deity exists. Some modern day monotheistic religions include Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Baha'i Faith, Sikhism, Zoroastrianism, Eckankar and some forms of Hinduism.

C. S. Lewis

Clive Staples Lewis (29 November 1898 – 22 November 1963) was a British novelist, poet, academic, medievalist, literary critic, essayist, lay theologian, broadcaster, lecturer, and Christian apologist. He held academic positions at both Oxford University (Magdalen College), 1925–54, and Cambridge University (Magdalene College), 1954–63. He is best known for his fictional work, especially The Screwtape Letters, The Chronicles of Narnia, and The Space Trilogy, and for his non-fiction Christian apologetics, such as Mere Christianity, Miracles, and The Problem of Pain.

Lewis and fellow novelist J. R. R. Tolkien were close friends. They both served on the English faculty at Oxford University, and were active in the informal Oxford literary group known as the Inklings. According to Lewis' memoir Surprised by Joy, he was baptised in the Church of Ireland, but fell away from his faith during adolescence. Lewis returned to the Anglican Communion at the age of 32, owing to the influence of Tolkien and other friends, and he became an "ordinary layman of the Church of England". His faith profoundly affected his work, and his wartime radio broadcasts on the subject of Christianity brought him wide acclaim.

This is a response to "God vs. Atheism: Which is More Rational?" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4T_P14JjMcM The first thing I have to point out is that it's not God vs atheism; it's theism vs atheism. God isn't involved in this because God doesn't exist. And it's not which one is MORE rational; it's which one is rational at all, and which one is wholly irrational. Some months ago, I said I wouldn't do any more pwnage videos because I wouldn't waste any more time responding to anyone who didn't have a significant negative impact on the community at-large. Then Dr. Peter Kreeft made a video attacking atheists with the same fallacious arguments typical of amateur trolls. He misrepresents both his own position and ours with the lies of equivocation and projection, by pretending that assuming baseless conclusions doesn't require faith, but that NOT believing all that unsupported nonsense somehow DOES require faith. It's bad enough that he does this as a professor of philosophy at Boston college, but here he is representing Prager University. A quick look at Prager University's website shows that they're nothing more than a right-wing conservative propaganda machine. They have multiple 'courses' against feminism and social justice, liberals and education, and they promote unregulated free-market capitalism and prioritize military spending and defense of Israel. After reviewing their list of 'courses', I was actually surprised that I didn't see any on climate-change denial or any arguments against vaccination. Maybe next semester? C.S. Lewis: It must be understood that my conversion at that point was only to theism pure and simple. I knew nothing yet about the incarnation. The God to whom I surrendered was sheerly non-human. C.S. Lewis: [Reading from Chesterton] A great man knows he is not God and the greater he is, the better he knows it. The gospels declare that this mysterious maker of the world has visited his world in person. The most that any religious prophet has said was that he was the true servant of such a being. But if the creator was present in the daily life of the Roman empire, that is something unlike anything else in nature. It is the one great startling statement that man has made since he spoke his first articulate word. It makes dust and nonsense of comparative religion. C.S. Lewis: As I drew near to Christianity, I felt a resistance almost as strong as my previous resistance to theism. As strong but shorter lived for I understood it better. But each step, one had less chance to call one's soul one's own. C.S. Lewis: What Tolkien showed me was this — that if I met the idea of sacrifice in a pagan story I didn't mind it at all — I was mysteriously moved by it. The reason was that in pagan stories I was prepared to feel the myth as profound. Now the story of Christ is simply a true myth. C.S. Lewis: I know very well when but hardly how the final step was taken. I went with my brother to have a picnic at Whipsnade Zoo. We started in fog, but by the end of our journey the sun was shining. When we set out I did not believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and when we reached the zoo I did. I had not exactly spent the journey in thought. Nor in great emotion. It was more like when a man, after a long sleep, becomes aware that he is now awake.

O'Brien Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame. One of the most important living philosophers of religion, he is credited with helping revive Christian philosophy. Acclaimed for his work on metaphysics, the problem of evil, and the epistemology of religious belief, he is the author or editor of many books, including God and Other Minds, The Nature of Necessity, Faith and Rationality, and a major trilogy on "Warrant" which argues, among many other things, that belief in God is "properly basic." Ernest Sosa is the Board of Governors Professor of Philosophy at Rutgers University. He received his Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburg in 1964 and taught at Brown University for four decades before moving to Rutgers in 2007. Professor Sosa focuses primarily on epistomology. MSL Launches to the Red Planet: The Atlantic Ocean provides a backdrop as the United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket clears the tower at Space Launch Complex 41 on Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.
