A ball bearing is a type of rolling-element bearing that uses balls to maintain the separation between the bearing races.
The purpose of a ball bearing is to reduce rotational friction and support radial and axial loads. It achieves this by using at least two races to contain the balls and transmit the loads through the balls. In most applications, one race is stationary and the other is attached to the rotating assembly (e.g., a hub or shaft). As one of the bearing races rotates it causes the balls to rotate as well. Because the balls are rolling they have a much lower coefficient of friction than if two flat surfaces were sliding against each other.
Ball bearings tend to have lower load capacity for their size than other kinds of rolling-element bearings due to the smaller contact area between the balls and races. However, they can tolerate some misalignment of the inner and outer races.
Although roller bearings had been developed since ancient times, the first modern recorded patent on ball bearings was awarded to Philip Vaughan, a Welsh inventor and ironmaster who created the first design for a ball bearing in Carmarthen in 1794. His was the first modern ball-bearing design, with the ball running along a groove in the axle assembly.
A ball is a round, usually spherical but sometimes ovoid, object with various uses. It is used in ball games, where the play of the game follows the state of the ball as it is hit, kicked or thrown by players. In the context of sports, "ball" need not refer to a spherical object, as is the case in American football. Balls can also be used for simpler activities, such as catch, marbles and juggling. Balls made from hard-wearing materials are used in engineering applications to provide very low friction bearings, known as ball bearings. Black-powder weapons use stone and metal balls as projectiles.
Although many types of balls are today made from rubber, this form was unknown outside the Americas until after the voyages of Columbus. The Spanish were the first Europeans to see bouncing rubber balls (albeit solid and not inflated) which were employed most notably in the Mesoamerican ballgame. Balls used in various sports in other parts of the world prior to Columbus were made from other materials such as animal bladders or skins, stuffed with various materials.

This edition of the series of programs explaining the technology used to produce items that are familiar in our daily life features ‘Steel Balls’. A bicycle wheel spins smoothly because the wheel axle contains ball bearings. The steel balls inside the ball bearing must be close to perfectly spherical. The program introduces the production method of high-precision steel balls with a margin of error of less than 0.1 micrometers.

A very simple little skill toy, but not so simple to do! Place a ball bearing inside the plastic ring, and move the ring so that the ball bearing is spinning around the inside track. Then, if the ball bearing is rotating quickly enough, you can turn the ring so that it is horizontal. There are various other tracks you can perform as well. However you can then slot two rings together, and attempt the same trick, now with two rings and two ball bearings. This is quite difficult, and Tim only manages to achieve this occasionally. Luckily it happened while the camera was running! However at a trade fair a few years ago, Tim saw someone demonstrating this using the maximum of 4 rings and 4 ball bearings. Seriously tricky!

This is a demonstration my unconventional Spinning Tops with a very high center of gravity. I made them on my Chinese mini lathe and mini mill out of round and hex brass and copper stock, balls from ball bearings, threaded rods from the hardware store and 3mm rods from old CD-ROM drives and of course golf balls, a 2 € coin, a tungsten ring (ebay jewelry), ball bearings, etc. I didn't draw any plans, but the dimensions are not critical, so it's enough to eyeball the dimensions if you want to make them by yourself. Transcript of annotations (to help search engines): Welcome to my Spinning Tops Normal Spinning Tops have a very low Center of gravity The Spinning Tops that I made have their center of gravity at the top. You might think, that makes them very unstable. But in fact th...

Please read the description: I really enjoyed making this video and I hope you enjoyed watching. I completely understand that making a spinner like this doesn't seem to be worth it for some people. Ceramic bearings versus steel bearings, the debate has gone on for a long time. I decided to test the capabilities of Ceramicspeed, Enduro, A cheap ebay bearing and the big bearing manufacturers. The big bearing manufacturers win hands down. The vast majority of friction comes from the type of bearing seal. Contact bearings have significantly more friction than non contact types. The choice of balls has little effect. Conclusion: Ceramicspeed are overpriced and inferior. In this video I demonstrate how I forge a 1 5/8" ball bearing into a tanto point knife. This video is of the forging only. After forging I start the heat treating processes by normalizing, followed by annealing. After the blade has been profiled I harden and temper. I use the app published by the Heat Treating Society. It can be found in the App Store under the name Heat Treater's Guide Companion. The anvil is a TFS Smithy Special #200 The hammers are first, #4 sledgehammer with the faces dressed into a rounding hammer. The second hammer is a #3 Modified New Style by Brent Bailey. It has a very flat face with radiused edges. The other side is a large ball peen, not used in this video. I use a coal burning forge with bituminous coal.
This week I show how I make my new bearing cages for the pivots on my knives. Not satisfied with the current solutions on the market, I went ahead and designed my own, mostly for the extra "cool" factor, but they turned out perfect. The fixture was probably the hardest part, it's an intricate vacuum fixture using a ton of o-rings that seal the vacuum so that it pulls down the material evenly. I used Nylon sheet that's around 0.047" thick, and with my fixture I can make loads of them in one setup. One of the tricks to machining plastics is using the proper endmills, I settled on some Kyocera single flute endmills for the best surface finish. In the end the project consumed a lot of my time, but the results were worth it because the bearings work perfectly. And now that it's all set ...
http://www.mobiusinstitute.com In this webinar, Jason Tranter first discusses the most common reasons why rolling element bearings fail, including lubrication problems, lubricant contamination, excessive loading, and installation and handling. Next, the webinar summarizes how a variety of condition monitoring technologies can be utilized to determine the condition of rolling element bearings, including basic and advanced vibration analysis, oil analysis, wear particle analysis, and thermography. And finally, and most importantly, Jason discusses how to make changes in order to extend the life of rolling element bearings through precision maintenance techniques. Some of the techniques summarized include precision balancing, precision alignment, resonance elimination, improved installation...
