In Pakistan, UNDP embarked upon the “China South-South Cooperation Assistance Fund for the Recovery Project in FATA and Balochistan” earlier this year. This is a ground-breaking partnership between Pakistan, China and UNDP to help some of Pakistan’s most vulnerable communities establish strong foundations for a peaceful and prosperous future. Through this collaboration, in FATA, 8,100 families returning home after years of displacement are provided assistance to re-establish their lives in the critical first months after return.

US$ 2.5 million project launched for the continuation of education in South Waziristan and Kurram Agencies

The UN Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has approved the allocation of US$ 2.5 million for the continuation of the children’s education in the areas of return in South Waziristan (Serwakai, Sararogha and Tiarza tehsils) and Kurram (Lower, Central and Upper tehsils) agencies of FATA, Pakistan.

Transforming ideas into action – Understanding the Multi-Dimensional Poverty Index

To support continued research in the field of multidimensional poverty for improved policy making, UNDP has organized a training session on the MPI in collaboration with the Ministry of Planning Development and Reforms (MoPDR) and Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS). The five-day training is being delivered by Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI) to a group of participants from relevant ministries, provincial and regional line departments including Bureau of Statistics, UN Agencies, and selected public universities.

New research shows major efforts are required to enhance women’s representation in Pakistan’s civil service

The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women) jointly released a study of women’s representation and access to decision-making roles in the civil service under UNDP’s global Gender Equality in Public Administration (GEPA) initiative at a launch event today. The study found that societal barriers remain to women’s representation and advancement in the civil service. The recommendations of the study will support the Government of Pakistan and its development partners to develop evidence-based programming to address barriers to gender equality in public administration.

Mountaineer Samina Baig is UNDP’s National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan

Renowned mountaineer Samina Baig was appointed the National Goodwill Ambassador for Pakistan by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today. The first Pakistani woman to have climbed Mount Everest, Ms Baig will lead efforts to build national awareness and partnerships around the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly those related to climate change, environmental protection and women’s empowerment.

Paradigm shift in growth policy as research shows economic inequality is harmful for sustainable growth

A report titled “Inclusive and Sustainable Development: Analytical Basis and Policy Framework” was launched today by the Ministry of Planning, Development and Reform in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The report, authored by eminent Pakistani economist Dr Akmal Hussain, overturns long-standing beliefs to show that economic inequality is harmful for long-term sustainable growth. The report’s findings will be instrumental in shaping policy directions in the coming years.

The Government of Japan and UNDP partner to support over 20,000 youth with skills training and employment opportunities

The Government of Japan and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) today signed an agreement to launch a US$3.9 million initiative aiming to empower more than 20,000 youth in Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces. This initiative will help improve employment prospects and promote social cohesion through positive interactions amongst young people in deprived communities, helping them participate actively in the socioeconomic development of Pakistan.
