Keynote

A keynote in public speaking is a talk that establishes a main underlying theme. In corporate or commercial settings, greater importance is attached to the delivery of a keynote speech or keynote address. The keynote establishes the framework for the following programme of events or convention agenda; frequently the role of keynote speaker will include that of convention moderator. It will also flag up a larger idea – a literary story, an individual musical piece or event.

At political or industrial conventions and expositions and at academic conferences, the keynote address or keynote speech is delivered to set the underlying tone and summarize the core message or most important revelation of the event. Some of the more famous keynote speeches in the United States are those made at the party conventions during Democratic and Republican presidential campaigns. Keynote speakers at these events have often gained nationwide fame (or notoriety); for example, Barack Obama at the 2004 Democratic National Convention, and have occasionally influenced the course of the election. In the commercial arena, Steve Jobs delivered influential keynote speeches at Apple product, system and service launches.

Jeremy Gutsche

Jeremy Gutsche (born April 7, 1978) is a Canadian innovation expert, entrepreneur, author, and the founder and CEO of TrendHunter, a website dedicated to identifying trends.

Gutsche has been described as "a new breed of trend spotter" by The Guardian, an "Oracle" by the Globe and Mail and "on the forefront of cool" by MTV. He is frequently sourced by the media for his opinions on the next big thing, including The Economist,Fox Business,CBC News, and Entertainment Tonight.

History

Gutsche was born in Calgary, Alberta where he was raised to be an entrepreneur. In his book, Better and Faster, he describes an upbringing that involved scouring hundreds of magazines each month with his father, in the search of ideas they would turn into prototypes and inventions. This activity would later lead to the concept behind Trend Hunter, a crowdsourced community that enables people to similarly scour for ideas to find inspiration.

Prior to starting Trend Hunter, Jeremy Gutsche was a management consultant with the Monitor Group and was Capital One's Director of Upmarket in Canada. At Capital One, he led his team to grow a $1 billion business.

Motivational speaker

A motivational speaker or inspirational speaker is a speaker who makes speeches intended to motivate or inspire an audience. Business entities may employ motivational speakers (for example) to communicate company strategy with clarity, to help employees to see the future in a positive light, or to inspire workers to pull together. The talk itself is often known as a pep talk.

Modern scholarship on classical oratory as a means of persuading and moving audiences can look to Cicero's De Oratore as an exemplar for "the rhetoric of motivation".

TED (Technology, Entertainment, Design) is a global set of conferences run by the private non-profit Sapling Foundation, under the slogan "Ideas Worth Spreading". The emphasis is on the entertainment aspect. TED was founded in 1984 as a one-off event; the annual conference series began in 1990. TED's early emphasis was technology and design, consistent with its Silicon Valley origins, but it has since broadened its focus to include talks on many scientific, cultural, and academic topics.

The main TED conference is held annually in Vancouver, Canada, and its companion TEDActive is held in Whistler, British Columbia. Prior to 2014, the two conferences were held in Long Beach and Palm Springs, California, respectively. TED events are also held throughout North America and in Europe and Asia, offering live streaming of the talks. They address a wide range of topics within the research and practice of science and culture, often through storytelling. The speakers are given a maximum of 18 minutes to present their ideas in the most innovative and engaging ways they can.
