In linguistics, diglossia (/daɪˈɡlɒsiə/; Greek: διγλωσσία < δι- prefix denoting two, from δίς, twice + γλῶσσα, language + -ία, suffix denoting state or attribute, "speaking two languages") refers to a situation in which two dialects or languages are used by a single language community. In addition to the community's everyday or vernacular language variety (labelled "L" or "low" variety), a second, highly codified variety (labelled "H" or "high") is used in certain situations such as literature, formal education, or other specific settings, but not used for ordinary conversation.
The high variety may be an older stage of the same language (e.g. Latin in the early Middle Ages), an unrelated language, or a distinct yet closely related present day dialect (e.g. Standard German with Low German (e.g., Plattdeutsch dialects), or Chinese with Mandarin as the official, literary standard and colloquial topolects/dialects used in everyday communication). Other examples include literary Katharevousa versus spoken Demotic Greek, Indonesian, with its Baku and Gaul forms.

In this e-lecture, I discuss Ferguson's classical article called "Diglossia" published in 1959. I define what is Diglossia. Then I go through its main features as introduced in his article: namely: *Function *Prestige *Literary heritage *Acquisition *Standardization *Stability *Grammar *Lexicon *Phonology Then I go through Fishman's "Extended Diglossia". Finally I present the versions onto which diglossia can develop according to some sociolinguists. These are Triglossia (Mkifili, 1978) (Youssi, 1995) and Poliglossia (Platt, 1977).
This video explains the differences between diglossia, dialects and accents.
This book explores the phenomenon of diglossia in Arabic in the age of globalization and satellite media, and proposes a methodology for moving towards the adoption and use of standard Arabic in the public and private life of Arab society over three generational periods. It examines the past and current views on Arabic diglossia and the early calls for adopting the low variety of the language—these calls which have been invariably ideologically driven, politically propelled, and inspired or instigated by western writers and Orientalists, have no real basis in the ontic nature of Arabic. The misled notion that there are two separate Arabic languages (one native and one superposed) has been informed by Ferguson's questionable early work on diglossia. This book challenges this notion and argu...
This talk was presented in an international conference in Dubai (May 2016); it deals with Arabic diglossia, the issue of the child's transition from the home language, an Arabic dialect, to Standard Arabic, the school language. Pupils can only succeed in reaching an acceptable level of academic achievement if they are involved in a two- to three-year pre-school preparation for the school language. A parallel issue relates to their cognitive development which is disrupted in primary school without such a preparation.
This video is dealing with a Sociolinguistic phenomenon called Diglossia, a simple analysis of it—when I said simple, I mean it, like literally. 😁 It's submitted as my Sociolinguistic class assignment. Yeah!
I was Jim Jones' attorney
I said, 'When did you find out that he was not the man of God that he was billed to be?'
He said, 'When I visited Jonestown, when I walked in his so-called church'
He said, 'There was no bible, there were no holy pictures, there was no cross
Nothing
And I looked him right in the eye and I said to him
"Why is it there's no bible, and there's no place to pray?"
He said, "We don't need that anymore"'

And I'm going to reveal something to you that possibly the public does not know
Sir Lionel Luckhoo told me that the coroner was a close personal friend of his
