Preston

The district of Preston is a metropolitan electorate located approximately nine kilometres north-east of Melbourne.

It includes the suburbs of Preston and Reservoir, as well as several streets in Coburg near the Merri Creek. The district features residential areas, recreation and sports reserves, Melbourne Water reservoirs, Northland Shopping Centre, and Melbourne Polytechnic (formerly NMIT). Preston is a multicultural and diverse community.

Michael Andrew Leighton (20 October 1954 – 8 November 2014)

Born in Melbourne, Victoria. Joined the Australian Labor Party in 1976, was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Labor member for Preston. Held various positions in the Shadow Ministry from 1992- 96.

Shadow Minister for Small Business, Shadow Minister for Youth Affairs and Shadow Minister Assisting the Shadow Minister for Industrial Relations 1992-93. Shadow Minister for Housing and Construction 1993-96. Committee Service: Social Development Committee 1988-92; Economic Development Committee 1992-99 (Deputy Chair 1992-96). House Committee 1999-2001. House Cttee 2003-06. Scrutiny of Acts and Regulations Cttee 2003-06.

He died, aged 60, on 8th November 2014.
