WINNER OF THE SOUTHERN BOOK CRITICS CIRCLE AWARD FOR NONFICTION • “A landmark work of unflinching scholarship.”—The New York Times

This extraordinary account of lynching in America, by acclaimed civil rights historian Philip Dray, shines a clear, bright light on American history’s darkest stain—illuminating its causes, perpetrators, apologists, and victims. Philip Dray also tells the story of the men and women who led the long and difficult fight to expose and eradicate lynching, including Ida B. Wells, James Weldon Johnson, Walter White, and W.E.B. Du Bois. If lynching is emblematic of what is worst about America, their fight may stand for what is best: the commitment to justice and fairness and the conviction that one individual’s sense of right can suffice to defy the gravest of wrongs. This landmark book follows the trajectory of both forces over American history—and makes lynching’s legacy belong to us all.

Praise for At the Hands of Persons Unknown

“In this history of lynching in the post-Reconstruction South—the most comprehensive of its kind—the author has written what amounts to a Black Book of American race relations.”
The New Yorker

“A powerfully written, admirably perceptive synthesis of the vast literature on lynching. It is the most comprehensive social history of this shameful subject in almost seventy years and should be recognized as a major addition to the bibliography of American race relations.”
—David Levering Lewis

“An important and courageous book, well written, meticulously researched, and carefully argued.”
The Boston Globe

“You don’t really know what lynching was until you read Dray’s ghastly accounts of public butchery and official complicity.”

Editorial Reviews

From The New Yorker

In this history of lynching in the post-Reconstruction South—the most comprehensive of its kind—the author has written what amounts to a Black Book of American race relations. Dray has scoured the archives and emerged with a plethora of horror stories, but he has also made excellent use of recent work on the psychology and sociology of lynchings and has incorporated everything into a tight, cleanly written narrative. He demonstrates that lynching was not a hysterical spasm of violence committed by a few angry troublemakers but a social institution—a ritualized spectacle that was central to white Southerners' understanding of themselves and their quest to uphold a way of life they saw as threatened. But if lynching was instrumental in the preservation of racial oppression it also proved a catalyst for resistance: the anti-lynching crusades of Ida B. Wells and the N.A.A.C.P. gave birth to the modern civil-rights movement.

I just finished AT THE HANDS OF PERSON’S UNKNOWN, a real page turning treasure trove of constructive information about white terrorism in the United States from the end of the Civil War until the Chaney, Goodman, Schwerner murders during the “Civil Rights Movement”. The book might seem to be repetitive to some that read it, but that is the point. In the system of white supremacy, the “justice” system is repetitive and completely without justice. We think the non-indictments of killer cops today is something new. This book details America’s long tradition of authorities looking the other way while white mobs seize Black crime suspects for ritualistic murder. And the story always ends the same way. Death at the hands of persons unknown, non-indictments or acquittals, over and over and over again. Terms like “barbecue” and “souvenir” will never have the same meaning for you after reading this book. Reading the grizzly details of the violence white people gleefully indulged in on a routine basis towards Black people is far more impactful on me than seeing any lynching photos. This is the kind of stuff most Black people don’t want to read because it tells us how we should really feel about white people. This book as much as any other book I’ve read explains why any story involving white women and Black men is always the most publicized story in this society. You will laugh your behind off at any white person bringing up O.J. Simpson after reading this. Numerous historical figures are references throughout the book (Ida B. Wells, W.E.B. Dubois, Walter White), but no figure is really the centerpiece. You will find a very consistent pattern of racist rhetoric by white politicians, judges, prosecutors and lawmen that are totally applicable today. The author is white so I don’t recommend buying this book. You can tell at point that the author is white because he writes so much about Black people being maimed and murdered, subtitles the book THE LYNCHING OF BLACK AMERICA, but devotes special attention in the middle of the book to Leo Frank, a white Jewish man is victim of a lynching. The epilogue is also full of alot of bs about "progress" that has been made. I bought it years ago when I was still confused about racism and purchased books of suspected racists. I do recommend you look for it at your local library. If you feel you have to purchase it, buy a cheap used copy. Along with books like RACIAL MATTERS, SLAVERY BY ANOTHER NAME, BURIED IN THE BITTER WATERS and many others, this book proves that white people are not ignorant about racism. 463 pages of information all Black people should feel obligated to know.

Although mostly associated with the South, this hideous practice occurred nationwide and reflects a cesspool of hatred and brutality. Its historical, strong endorsement by deeply religious people is particularly disturbing.
Before reading this book, I was unaware of the incidents in Duluth, MN and Peekskill, NY.
Although not an encyclopedia of lynching, I was surprised the author did not include the 1930 lynching in Marion, Indiana, which is infamous for its photos of a large, gleeful crowd witnessing the spectacle. It is beyond me to understand how people can get so excited about witnessing the mutilation, torture, murder, immolation. and humiliation of a human being by a frenzied mob.
Even today, I am repulsed by the jubilant crowds that show up for prison executions where they sing taunting, morbid ditties like, "Goodnight Larry" or whoever.
The author mistakenly identified Strom Thurmond as a Senator from North Carolina. Thurmond was from South Carolina. Also, the "Negro bubble" the author mentions about a university in Oklahoma in the 1930s was not a new concept. It existed long before that at some other universities.

This well-written and shocking book about our country's dismal treatment of black Americans (mostly, but not exclusively) documents in gruesome detail some of the worst traits of man-on-man violence ever put on paper and I don't exaggerate when I say it is quite sickening how ingrained hate can effect whole communities. In some of the most hideous stories you won't hear about in grade school history, white violence against black people of all ages, sex or origin (mostly in the South, tho) are told with compelling narrative. You come to understand that it was a long haul from Reconstruction to voting rights laws, punctuated by the terror of being dragged out of your home and brutalized in the most terrible ways imaginable. Granted, some of those lynched were probably guilty of crimes they were accused of but none were given fair trials and even then, many were dragged out of police custody and killed outrageously in front of huge crowds. This is not a pleasant book but there are inspiring characters on the side of justice who worked long years to stamp out lynching and for that the author is credited with balancing a horrible subject that otherwise would be the most depressing history book ever. My only regret is that footnotes aren't apparent until you get to the end of the text and see there's a section of "Notes" that tells even more stories that could've been elaborated in real-time reading. But this caveat takes nothing away from this important book.

Though occasionally repetitious and circular in its storytelling, this book is a deep dive into the post-Civil War history of avoidance and gutting of the post-war Constitutional Amendments (13th through 15th). It is also a clear history of the South's successful re-imposition of near-slavery on former slaves once it sucessfully got out from under the yoke of Reconstruction. The sexual and social mythologies that fueled wanton murder in the name of protecting Southern womanhood from predatory Black males, the bastardization of codes of honor and justice, all make for a story that is relevant and necessary reading for thoughtful Americans today. Lynching was not confined to African American victims--poor whites and Jewish victims exist. It was also as much about burning victims alive as much as hanging them. Wiping out entire parts of towns occupied by successful Black communities is also part of this legacy. As white supremacy as a rising trend seems to be grabbing headlines, people should read this book.
