Corey’s life changed in September 2009 when he sustained a crushed spinal cord at a motocross event. He spent four months in the Spinal Unit learning the basics of how to live life in a wheelchair. Adjusting to a new way of life was tough but Corey remained determined to continue to live a fulfilled life.
In 2011, two years after the accident, he was introduced to the sport of sit skiing. He took to the sport immediately and the same year won gold in the men’s adaptive sit-ski event at the ParaSnowboard Winter Games at Cardrona Alpine Resort in New Zealand. From there he set himself the ultimate goal of representing New Zealand at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games.
In a short space of time has Corey propelled himself onto the world stage of Paralympic Alpine Ski racing. Only 2 years after his accident he not only achieved his goal of representing New Zealand at the Sochi 2014 Paralympic Winter Games, but won a silver medal in the Giant Slalom. He placed fourth in the Super-Combined and sixth in Super-G.
Corey was named Snow Sports NZ Overall Athlete of the Year and Adaptive Snow Sports Athlete of the Year in 2015 and 2014. From here his career has just gone from strength to strength. Great things are expected in the near future.

Snow Sports NZ Breakthrough Season
A sit-ski is a specially designed monoski used by skiers with lower limb disabilities including paralysis. Using the same skis used for able-bodied alpine skiing, the sit-ski is adapted so that the skier sits on a chair attached to the ski via a shock absorber.
Outriggers, a forearm crutch with a small ski, are used for stability. The quality of the design combined with the ability of the skier can allow the sit-skier to conquer the entire mountain.
Corey's fast learning ability, commitment to excellence, and incredible work ethic makes Snow Sports decision to invest into his programme an easy one. A great human and ambassador for the sport, Corey is on track to continue to deliver gold medals for many years to come.
