UPDATE on anti-Tommy Robinson demo, Sat 14th July

10 07 2018

Facebook event

Four days to go until our opposition to the next ‘Free Tommy’ anti-Muslim hatefest in central London.

We will be meeting at 1pm at the International Brigades Memorial in Jubilee Gardens on the south bank of the river and will march from there.

In case you missed the news, the racist far-right are mobilising around a campaign to free Tommy Robinson, the notorious Muslim-hating ex-head of the EDL, sent to prison for interfering with a grooming gang court case. Their last demonstration in London brought 10,000 violent bigots on to the streets, screaming anti-Muslim abuse, threatening and attacking people. This was the largest far-right demo in Britain since the 1930s.

Stop Trump on July 13th – Stop Tommy on the 14th!

27 06 2018

The far-right are coming back to London on Saturday July 14th. Last time they brought 10,000 racists on to the streets united by their hatred of Muslims. They are bringing together all the disparate factions of far-right under the ‘Free Tommy’ banner, campaigning for release of EDL founder and ex-BNP member Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, who got himself imprisoned for being a serial disrupter of important criminal trials.

They are also going to form a large ‘pro-Trump’ rally just one day after the massive anti-Trump protests on the 13th.

All the same figureheads of the alt-right who backed Trump and brought him to power are now backing Tommy Robinson – Steve Bannon, Breitbart, Milo Yiannopoulos, the Proud Boys, Info Wars. Trump’s Republicans have even raised the bogus ‘Free Tommy’ issue in the Senate. They are trying to build a Trumpian alt-right in the UK. It is essential that all anti-racists and anti-fascists try and come together to oppose this new far-right threat.

We call on all anti-racists to protest Trump on the 13th and to join us in opposing the ‘Free Tommy’ mob on Sat 14th.

Our counter-mobilisation event is here. More details will be released nearer the time.

Spread the word.

Oppose Tommy Robinson and the FLA in London, Sunday May 6th

30 04 2018

Facebook event

On Sunday 6 May thousands of far-right anti-Muslim bigots will be marching through central London. Anti-fascists from across the country need to take to the streets to oppose them.

When Darren Osborne drove a van into a group of Muslims outside Finsbury Park Mosque, killing Makram Ali and injuring at least eight others, he had tweets by Tommy Robinson printed out and stuck to the dashboard of the van. Over the course of Osborne’s trial it was revealed he had been following Robinson on Twitter and been signed up to an email list which Robinson used to mobilise people for anti-Muslim protests.

These facts being the case, it is clear that Tommy Robinson is an anti-Muslim hate preacher whose violent rhetoric radicalises killers.

“Roots of Antifa” – German Anti-Fascist speaking tour of the UK

31 10 2017

This November, the AFN, together with other anti-fascists from around the country, has helped organise a speaking tour for a German anti-fascist comrade.

The rise of fascist movements and parties all over Europe has once again made it clear: organised antifascist resistance is necessary. In order to successfully intervene and stop fascism from spreading, it is useful to take a look at the different experiences built from movements in other countries, particularly the history of the Antifa movement which originally started in 1930’s Germany.

The speaker, who is a member of the “ums Ganze!” Bündnis and has been part of antifascist initiatives and organisations for more than ten years, tries to present the major strategies, struggles, defeats, victories, splits, and theories of the Antifaschistische Aktion from 1932 to the present. Afterwards, we will have a discussion about the lessons there are for the movement here, going forwards in 2017.

For links to all the separate events check out the Roots of Antifa Facebook page

Community defence against the EDL – All out! London, Sat 24th June

20 06 2017

Facebook event

Everything is up in the air. The government is in chaos, risking peace in Ireland by making a pact with hard-line Ulster loyalists. There have been a number of terrorist attacks in quick succession. No one knows where Brexit negotiations will take us. The horror of Grenfell tower has created huge public anger which is spilling out onto the streets. On Monday night a terrorist inspired by the hate preachers of the far-right drove a van into a crowd of people outside a mosque in North London shouting “Kill all Muslims!”

These are vital times for those of us fighting for a better world and we are at a turning point. There is a real danger that the UK could see increasing attacks on Muslims and immigrants, fascists marching in greater numbers on the streets, a UK state allied with Trump, the bigots of the DUP calling the shots in government, hard Brexit. But the election showed a huge and no longer hidden desire for a different politics. There is the possibility that with renewed organising we could turn things around and create a future with more hope for working class people, for migrants, for everyone left out at the moment – turn around austerity, get rid of a brutal and racist government and drive the fascists back into shame and hiding.
