powerful playing, excellent musicality - dramatic and emotional: "The Ambush from all sides" (中国传统音乐经典琵琶名曲 《十面埋伏》), is undoubtedly the most famous pipa master piece from the Chinese traditional repertoire, performed by virtuoso soloist Liu Fang （劉芳）during a solo recital in the Pierre-Mercurre Hall of the Centre Pierre-Peladeau, on March 27, 2002, in Montreal, recorded by Mr. Zhou Fan of Montreal Multi-cultural TV, Chinese chanel.
Pipa is a Chinese traditional music instrument with over 2000 years of history. The "Ambush from ten side" is one of the most famous classical instrumental music of China.
With its highly virtuoso programmatic effects and tremendous power, this piece is regarded as the most representative of the "martial repertoire" of classical pipa solo. It describes the glorious victory of Liu Bang over Xiang Yu in 202 BC, the same theme as "The King doffs his Armour", however, from a totally different view point. There is no information about the composer, but some researches indicate that this piece might be dated back as early as the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-917AD).

"I felt very happy, but at the same time very nervous, with so many people watching, especially as it is after all a competition, I felt very excited."
Another year has flown by, and once again its time for NTD Television's Series of Chinese cultural Competitions. First up is the Vocal Competition, already underway. Let's have a listen.
Here at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College in Manhattan, contestants from around the world are given a chance to sparkle.
[Yao-chun Chang, Taiwanese Contestant]:
"(The other contestants) are outstanding and really formidable, as I expected, it opened my eyes. I've seen contestants from Taiwan, Mainland China, America, Japan, Argentina and Germany and they're all outstanding."
Unique to this competition is the repertoire, which includes both classical Western songs, as well as Chinese language songs.
Up for grabs is a gold prize of 10,000 U.S. dollars. But these contestants aren't letting the prize money break their cool. Each song is sung with absolute focus and dedication. Any slipup will be caught by the scrutinizing eye of the man some call the greatest Chinese tenor and a judge in this competition, Guan Guimin.
After three days of competition and elimination, the winners are announced. In the men's cateogry, Huan Xing from Canada took the gold prize. In the women's category, Tan Sinsim, originally from Malaysia, who has been studying music in New York for the past two years, took home the prize.

"For me, this prize is a confirmation of the efforts I have put in over the years. I didn't imagine that I would join a competition like this after only just graduating and get the top prize. I'm really thankful for receiving this acknowledgment. I thank them and what is more, I had this opportunity to sing Chinese songs and win a prize in America. I feel thats really hard to come by."

An improvised composition on a Japanese two-string zither called the Azuma nigenkin 二弦 琴, by Randy Raine-Reusch. This is somewhat of a duet with the heater in the background. This piece is much slower than most nigenkin works so the ghost tones on the nigenkin can be heard. As the nigenkin has two bridges, the string sounds on either side of the slide (rokan) can be heard. These ghost tones are a unique aspect of the nigekin. The nigekin is usually tuned much higher to match a woman's singing voice and has thinner strings. I prefer to use thicker strings and a lower tuning to better hear all the nuances of the instrument.
Nigenkin 二弦 琴 (from ASZA.com)
The Azuma nigenkin, often just referred to as the nigenkin, is an extremely rare two-string zither found only in the Asakusa suburb of Tokyo. The nigenkin is a fairly recent instrument adapted from the Yakumo-goto, a two-string zither used exclusively in Shinto shrines. In the early Meiji Period (1868-1912), Tosha Rosen, a Yakumo-goto player, started to use the instrument to perform the secular popular music of the time (hauta and zokkyoku), and as a result was asked to sever his association with the Shinto Shrine and was forbidden to play the Yakumo-goto. He therefore created the Azuma nigenkin, with only subtle differences to its predecessor, notably an open back and less ornamentation.
The name Tosha Rosen was then passed through the family, eventually from mother to daughter, as each took on the title of Iemoto of the Azuma nigenkin, but the last Tosha Rosen died in 2004 without naming a successor. She had only 25 students. The fate of this instrumental style is unknown. There are only two known players of the nigenkin outside of Japan, and only Randy Raine-Reusch performs on this instrument regularly.
The nigenkin is played with a plastic or ivory pick and a large slide called a rokan. The rokan is slid along the strings, which are tuned in unison, to the desired pitch. As the nigenkin has two bridges on either end of the instrument, the strings on both sides of the rokan sound when it is moved, producing a ghost-like secondary tone, which is quite beautiful. There are 95 original works for Azuma nigenkin mostly composed by the original Tosha Rosen, but the repertoire also includes popular songs from its inception to present. Randy Raine-Reusch has also added works to its repertoire.

White
White is an achromatic color, literally a "color without hue", that is a mixture of the frequencies of all the colors of the visible spectrum. It is one of the most common colors in nature, the color of sunlight, snow, milk, chalk, limestone and other common minerals. In many cultures white represents or signifies purity, innocence, and light, and is the symbolic opposite of black, or darkness. According to surveys in Europe and the United States, white is the color most often associated with perfection, the good, honesty, cleanliness, the beginning, the new, neutrality, and exactitude.
In ancient Egypt and ancient Rome, priestesses wore white as a symbol of purity, and Romans wore a white toga as a symbol of citizenship. In the Middle Ages and Renaissance a white unicorn symbolized chastity, and a white lamb sacrifice and purity; the widows of kings dressed in white rather than black as the color of mourning. It sometimes symbolizes royalty; it was the color of the French kings (black being the color of the queens) and of the monarchist movement after the French Revolution as well as of the movement called the White Russians (not to be confounded with Belarus, literally "White Russia") who fought the Bolsheviks during the Russian Civil War (1917-1922). Greek and Roman temples were faced with white marble, and beginning in the 18th century, with the advent of neoclassical architecture, white became the most common color of new churches, capitols and other government buildings, especially in the United States of America. It was also widely used in 20th century modern architecture as a symbol of modernity, simplicity and strength.

Snow
Snow is precipitation in the form of flakes of crystalline water ice that falls from clouds.
Since snow is composed of small ice particles, it is a granular material. It has an open and therefore soft, white, and fluffy structure, unless subjected to external pressure. Snowflakes come in a variety of sizes and shapes. Types that fall in the form of a ball due to melting and refreezing, rather than a flake, are hail, ice pellets or snow grains.
The process of precipitating snow is called snowfall. Snowfall tends to form within regions of upward movement of air around a type of low-pressure system known as an extratropical cyclone. Snow can fall poleward of these systems' associated warm fronts and within their comma head precipitation patterns (called such due to the comma-like shape of the cloud and precipitation pattern around the poleward and west sides of extratropical cyclones). Where relatively warm water bodies are present, for example because of water evaporation from lakes, lake-effect snowfall becomes a concern downwind of the warm lakes within the cold cyclonic flow around the backside of extratropical cyclones. Lake-effect snowfall can be heavy locally. Thundersnow is possible within a cyclone's comma head and within lake effect precipitation bands. In mountainous areas, heavy snow is possible where upslope flow is maximized within windward sides of the terrain at elevation, if the atmosphere is cold enough. Snowfall amount and its related liquid equivalent precipitation amount are measured using a variety of different rain gauges.

An improvised composition on a Japanese two-string zither called the Azuma nigenkin 二弦 琴, by Randy Raine-Reusch. This is somewhat of a duet with the heater in the background. This piece is much slower than most nigenkin works so the ghost tones on the nigenkin can be heard. As the nigenkin has two bridges, the string sounds on either side of the slide (rokan) can be heard. These ghost tones are a unique aspect of the nigekin. The nigekin is usually tuned much higher to match a woman's singing voice and has thinner strings. I prefer to use thicker strings and a lower tuning to better hear all the nuances of the instrument. Pipa is a Chinese traditional music instrument with over 2000 years of history. The "Ambush from ten side" is one of the most famous classical instrumental music of China.
With its highly virtuoso programmatic effects and tremendous power, this piece is regarded as the most representative of the "martial repertoire" of classical pipa solo. It describes the glorious victory of Liu Bang over Xiang Yu in 202 BC, the same theme as "The King doffs his Armour", however, from a totally different view point. There is no information about the composer, but some researches indicate that this piece might be dated back as early as the Chinese Tang Dynasty (618-917AD).

Here at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College in Manhattan, contestants from around the world are given a chance to sparkle.

Unique to this competition is the repertoire, which includes both classical Western songs, as well as Chinese language songs.
Up for grabs is a gold prize of 10,000 U.S. dollars. But these contestants aren't letting the prize money break their cool. Each song is sung with absolute focus and dedication. Any slipup will be caught by the scrutinizing eye of the man some call the greatest Chinese tenor and a judge in this competition, Guan Guimin.
After three days of competition and elimination, the winners are announced. In the men's cateogry, Huan Xing from Canada took the gold prize. In the women's category, Tan Sinsim, originally from Malaysia, who has been studying music in New York for the past two years, took home the prize.

"For me, this prize is a confirmation of the efforts I have put in over the years. I didn't imagine that I would join a competition like this after only just graduating and get the top prize. I'm really thankful for receiving this acknowledgment. I thank them and what is more, I had this opportunity to sing Chinese songs and win a prize in America. I feel thats really hard to come by."

The nigenkin is a fairly recent instrument adapted from the Yakumo-goto, a two-string zither used exclusively in Shinto shrines. In the early Meiji Period (1868-1912), Tosha Rosen, a Yakumo-goto player, started to use the instrument to perform the secular popular music of the time (hauta and zokkyoku), and as a result was asked to sever his association with the Shinto Shrine and was forbidden to play the Yakumo-goto. He therefore created the Azuma nigenkin, with only subtle differences to its predecessor, notably an open back and less ornamentation.
The name Tosha Rosen was then passed through the family, eventually from mother to daughter, as each took on the title of Iemoto of the Azuma nigenkin, but the last Tosha Rosen died in 2004 without naming a successor. She had only 25 students. The fate of this instrumental style is unknown. There are only two known players of the nigenkin outside of Japan, and only Randy Raine-Reusch performs on this instrument regularly.
The nigenkin is played with a plastic or ivory pick and a large slide called a rokan. The rokan is slid along the strings, which are tuned in unison, to the desired pitch. As the nigenkin has two bridges on either end of the instrument, the strings on both sides of the rokan sound when it is moved, producing a ghost-like secondary tone, which is quite beautiful. There are 95 original works for Azuma nigenkin mostly composed by the original Tosha Rosen, but the repertoire also includes popular songs from its inception to present. Randy Raine-Reusch has also added works to its repertoire.
