The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Russian: Сою́з Сове́тских Социалисти́ческих Респу́блик, tr. Soyuz Sovetskikh Sotsialisticheskikh Respublik; IPA: [sɐˈjus sɐˈvʲɛtskʲɪx sətsɨəlʲɪsˈtʲitɕɪskʲɪx rʲɪˈspublʲɪk]) abbreviated to USSR (Russian: СССР, tr. SSSR) or shortened to the Soviet Union (Russian: Сове́тский Сою́з, tr. Sovetskij Soyuz; IPA: [sɐ'vʲetskʲɪj sɐˈjʉs]), was a Marxist–Leninist state on the Eurasian continent that existed between 1922 and 1991. A union of multiple subnational Soviet republics, its government and economy were highly centralized. The Soviet Union was a one-party state, governed by the Communist Party with Moscow as its capital.
The "History of Soviet Russia and the Soviet Union" reflects a period of change for both Russia and the world. Though the terms "Soviet Russia" and "Soviet Union" are synonymous in everyday vocabulary, when referring to the foundations of the Soviet Union, "Soviet Russia" refers to the few years after the October Revolution of 1917, but before the creation of the Soviet Union in 1922.
National Geographic or NatGeo may refer to:
Union is the state of being united or joined.
Union may also refer to:
A short film is any film not long enough to be considered a feature film. Although no consensus exists as to where that boundary is drawn, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences defines a short film as "an original motion picture that has a running time of 40 minutes or less, including all credits". The term featurette originally applied to a film longer than a short subject, but shorter than a standard feature film.
The increasingly rare term short subject means approximately the same thing. An industry term, it carries more of an assumption that the film is shown as part of a presentation along with a feature film. Short is an abbreviation for either term. Short films are often screened at local, national, or international film festivals and made by independent filmmakers for non profit, either with a low budget or no budget at all. They are usually funded by film grants, non profit organizations, sponsor, or personal funds. Short films are generally used by filmmakers to gain experience and/or prove their talent in order to gain funding for future films from private investors, entertainment companies, or film studios.

There is a working factory in the territory, that's where the machine gets the power from, but I don't show the outside of the building, because I don't want any people recognizing the location of the place and exposing it to everyone. Located just 800 miles from the North Pole on the island of Spitsbergen, the Soviet-era ghosttown of Pyramiden is one of the northernmost permanent settlements in the world. The site was first developed as a mining village in 1936, after the Soviets acquired the rights to mine the local coalfields. This is a series that I've been wanting to do for a while -- was life in the Soviet Union REALLY THAT BAD as some on the right and other free market types like to claim? I'm not really talking about the early Soviet era or say the WW2 era but rather the 1960s-80s Soviet Union and Warsaw Pact countries. The other day I was watching the Science Channel and they were talking about the Aral Sea -- and the old fisherman they were interviewing was talking about life under the Soviets was pretty good. When the Soviet Union collapsed cotton output in Tajikstan for instance, dropped 75% from 1990 to 2010. Industrial output in Tajikistan dropped 70% during the same era. Communism was certainly good for many people and many regions that now are forced to "hustle" with every one else for a little bit...

It was meant to inspire Soviet people who lived a hard life of poverty and astonish the whole world. Its many pavilions were created in a multitude of architectural styles and elaborately decorated by the best artists and sculptors of the USSR. Many of its sights became iconic symbols of Moscow: Vera Mukhina's sculpture Worker and Kolkhoz Woman, the golden fountain, the space rocket. But the Soviet people had to pay a great price for this splendour. Several thousand convicts from the Gulag were used to construct VDNKh and its initial architect, Vyacheslav Oltarzhevsky, was arrested for p...

This is the parade on Moscow's Red Square devoted to the 73rd anniversary of the Great October Socialist Revolution, 7 November 1990. By this time the situation inside the Soviet Union had grown more chaotic. Mikhail Gorbachev's reforms were not going as expected, with the Soviet economy falling into depression, and a torrent of nationalist movements sweeping across the USSR, the country's very existence was being called into question. This would be the last military parade of the Soviet era, and the final one in Russia to commemorate the October Revolution. By the end of next year the USSR would cease to exist as a political state. Taking the salute one last time is Minister of Defense of the USSR, Marshal of the Soviet Union Dmitriy Yazov. Commanding the parade is commander of the Moscow...

BBC History file documentary on life in Stalin's Russia. Intended for educational use.
This show looks into that activities of Kapustin Yar -- a remote, top secret, military development and test facility in Russia and said to be the former Soviet Union's version of Area 51. Kapustin Yar (Russian: Капустин Яр) is a Russian rocket launch and development site in Astrakhan Oblast, between Volgograd and Astrakhan. Known today as Znamensk (Russian: Знаменск), it was established 13 May 1946 and in the beginning used technology, material and scientific support from defeated Germany. Numerous launches of test rockets for the Russian military were carried out at the site, as well as satellite and sounding rocket launches. Open Street Map of the area. The 4th Missile Test Range "Kapustin Yar" was established by a decree of the Soviet Government "On Questions of Jet Propelled Weapons"...
Fantastic little 30 minute documentary including these great modern Russian & Ukrainian Diggers uncovering hidden Partisan bases from World War II etc etc Many interesting things are hidden underground. In Odessa, Ukraine, man-made caves are scattered across the region and are two and a half thousand kilometers long. These catacombs were home to partisan bases during World War II. In Vladivostok -- the main Russian military naval base in the Far East -- engineers built a fortress at the beginning of the 20th century. Also, the largest underground Russian church is hidden in Penza.
This is a BBC2 documentary from 2003 and probably one of the best on Stalin. The archive footage is very good and it draws upon some excellent evidence from close witnesses, including Stalin's own family. Uploaded for educational purposes only.

This broadcast is perhaps the most well known of the Soviet era parades. Taking the salute is First Minister of Defense, Marshal of the Soviet Union Sergei Sokolov (He passed away in 2012 at the age of 101. He was the oldest living Soviet Marshal).
