The History
UNDP has been empowering the lives of the Bhutanese people to achieve holistic sustainable development since the early 1970s. For the first 20 years in Bhutan, UNDP focused on laying the foundations to build local human resources. Resources were then channeled to train Bhutanese in specific skills, such as public administration, specialist surgery, telecommunication, law, aviation and journalism.Read more about UNDP in Bhutan

The Present
Today, after 43 years of transformational partnership, UNDP continues to be Bhutan’s key partner for growth. Over the years, the partnership has evolved to adapt to Bhutan’s changing development needs and challenges. Aligned to the government's 11th Five Year Plan, UNDP's current work in Bhutan is broadly categorized into the following portfolios:

The Future
With the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) now nearing its end, UNDP looks forward to embark on another era of development partnership in Bhutan.
The Rio+20 Conference initiated a new set of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to build upon the Millennium Development Goals and determine the post-2015 development agenda. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be consistent with international laws and build upon commitments already made.
It will address and incorporate a balanced approach on all dimensions of sustainable development and implement the outcomes of all major international summits in the socio-economic and environmental fields.
