Princes Freeway East - Longwarry to Traralgon Safety Improvements

We’re improving safety along the Princes Highway, Longwarry to Traralgon as part of Towards Zero. The State Government is investing $1.1 billion to achieve fewer than 200 deaths by 2020 and reduce serious injury by 15% on Victoria’s roads.

Project background

The Princes Freeway East is a key freight route between Melbourne and the NSW border with high traffic volumes between Longwarry and Traralgon.

Since 2013, there have been 53 run-off road crashes. 17 of them resulted in serious injuries and tragically, one resulted in a person losing their life.

Road Safety Improvements

The safety improvements we’re installing as part of this project include:

  • 160 kilometres of safety barrier along the roadside and in the centre median to reduce run-off crashes
