Improving road safety in Coburg

We’re improving safety along Bell Street and Sydney Road in Coburg as part of Towards Zero.

The State Government is investing $1.1 billion into Towards Zero, a plan to reduce Victoria’s road toll to fewer than 200 deaths by 2020 and reduce serious injuries by 15%.

More specifically, $100 million is being allocated to making roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Project update

Early works started near the Coburg Library on Louisa Street in December 2017.

We’ll be working on McKay Street  from the evening of Friday 09 – Monday 12 February 2018. The left lane closure of Bell Street, between McKay Street and Main Street, will be in place during this time so please be prepared for minor disruptions.

Project background

This project will run on Bell Street between Service Street and Budds Street, and Sydney Road between Bell Street and O’Hea Street, this area is also known as Coburg Central.

Coburg Central is home to a busy shopping and dining precinct and the Coburg Leisure Centre, making it a hotspot for pedestrians and traffic.

In the five year period ending 31 December 2016, there were 61 crashes along this section of Bell Street and Sydney Road, one of these crashes tragically saw one person lose their life.

Road Safety Improvements

The safety improvements we’re making include:

  • new safe speed of 40km/h from 7am-7pm;
  • raised pedestrian priority crossings on side roads in the area to slow down traffic when entering the main roads;
  • improved line marking to encourage drivers to travel at the reduced speed.

Community involvement

We recently ran a survey speaking to local residents, the nearby school community and Moreland City Council to find out their concerns about pedestrian safety in the area. One in three people said they felt unsafe on Bell Street, while one in four said they felt unsafe on Sydney Road.

We’ll continue to keep you updated with our works and safety improvements, including any construction activities such as timing, location, changes to road conditions or traffic delays.
