Camberwell Junction safety improvements

We’re improving safety around Camberwell Junction as part of Towards Zero. The State Government is investing $1.1 billion to achieve fewer than 200 deaths by 2020 and reduce serious injury by 15% on Victoria’s roads.

More specifically, $100 million has been allocated to making roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists.

Project background

Camberwell Junction and its surrounding Camberwell Shopping Precinct is a busy hub for retail and business, with a high number of pedestrians, cyclists and people using public transport.

Between 2012-2016, there were 42 casualty crashes in 60km/h zones, eight involving pedestrians and seven involving cyclists.

Road safety improvements 

The safety improvements we’re making include:

• 24 hour speed limits of 40km/h  in busy pedestrian areas along Burke Road, Riversdale Road and Camberwell Road
• New linemarking on sections of Burke Road, Camberwell Road and Riversdale Road
• Raised threshold treatments at 10 locations where local roads intersect with Camberwell Road, Burke Road and Riversdale Road:
  • Camberwell Road at Redfern Road and Monteath Avenue
  • Riversdale Road at Wills Street, Russell Street and Station Street and 
  • Burke Road at Burwood Avenue, Auburn Parade, Mayston Street, Broadway and Cookson Street.

Project update

During August 2017, we engaged with community and stakeholders, encouraging them to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns on our proposed plans for Camberwell Junction and surrounding areas. The feedback we received was largely in support of our proposed safety improvements.

This project is expected to be completed by the end of 2018.
