Backing up
Backing up is something no one needs convincing that its a sensible thing to do.
- some people still don't do
- some people do it badly
- some people kind of think its working over there somewhere but haven't checked out if it really doing what its supposed to do
- some people backup but have no idea how they would go about restoring stuff if they needed to restore their data
Its ESSENTIAL that you KNOW these things about your backup system.
- that your organisations data gets backed up every day
- that ALL the important stuff gets backed up. A good way to ensure this is to backup everything. Another good idea is that everyone's files are saved in the one place i.e. a single shared folder
- that someone could restore the data if needed and that this has been tested
- that there is the occasional archive. monthly, weekly, annually
- that a copy of the backup is stored somewhere other than your office.
There are many technical ways to achieve the results above. BUT ...
I think its best to leave the responsibility of this in the hands of your IT support and request that they provide a response in WRITING to a list of expectations like those listed in the points above.
