- No connection to the server or shared files
No connection to the server or shared files
A note about terms:
-
Shared files or the shared folder is a central place where staff can save and access files.
- The server is the device where the shared files are stored/saved.
People often use these terms interchangeably.
Server has connection problems
The problem could be that:
- none of the computers can connect to the shared files – the problem is with the server or the network itself
- one of the computers cannot connect to the shared files – the problem is with the that computer's connection to the network.
Server problems
If you've identified that the problem involves more than one computer. You could shutdown everything and restart them in a sequence.
Note: Only do this on advice from your IT support contractor and its important to know relevant logins BEFORE you take this step.
> Reboot the server.
> Reboot the router.
> Reboot all computers connected to the network.
Rebooting the server
Note: Only do this on advice from your IT support contractor and its important to know relevant logins BEFORE you take this step.
Before rebooting the server, shut down everything else, all computers, printers etc that should be connected to the network.
Rebooting is merely shutting down and restarting the computer. A server will generally switch off in the same way as the other computers in the office. Switching it back on may require a high level password. You need to know this BEFORE you switch OFF the server.
Rebooting the router
Note: Before rebooting the router, warn other staff because you will be disconnecting any programs that rely on the internet.
- Unplug the router from the power.
- Wait 20 seconds.
- Reconnect the router to the power.
Rebooting all computers
The general office computers are the first thing you should switch off and the last thing to switch back on.
If none of the above fixes the problem > Contact your IT support contractor.
Connection problems
If the computer connects to the network by a (blue) network cable:
> Check that the cable is plugged in to both the computer and the socket.
If the computer connects to the network by a wireless connection:
> Check that the wireless connection is working.
Then > Reboot the computer.
If this does not fix the problem > Contact your IT support provider.
Note: The computer may be connected to the network and yet not connect to the shared files. This can be useful for your IT support provider to know (i.e. you can't connect to shared files and you can/cannot connect to the internet). To check, see whether or not the computer can connect to a website.
