The Northeastern Anarchist is the English-language magazine of the Northeastern Federation of Anarchist-Communists (NEFAC), covering class struggle anarchist theory, history, strategy, debate and analysis in an effort to further develop anarchist-communist ideas and practice.

Welcome to issue #15 of Northeastern Anarchist. This issue was edited by NEFAC members in Maryland, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, with further contributions from our comrades in Ontario, Tennessee, Illinois, and California. This distributed means of editing and production seems to be working well for us so far, and we look forward to future collaboration. We’re starting things off right with an interview with bell hooks!

Amidst the recent economic crisis, our ongoing ecological crisis continues. Forty years after the original Earth Day, our problems seem even more manifold and complex. Held in late 2009, the United Nations Copenhagen Climate Conference has widely been regarded as ending in failure. In 2010, the explosion at British Petroleum’s Deepwater Horizon oil rig has created the largest marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry--devastating the gulf coast and the lives of the people who were already hit hard by hurricane Katrina. The twin powers of global governance and multi-national corporations seem both unwilling and unable to address environmental destruction.

Sometimes, the rhetoric turns towards an eco- Keynesian stimulus of “green” capitalism and “green” jobs. The actuality of those promises are quite different. In this issue we are talking first hand to workers in the “new green economy” about the complications and contradictions of the efforts to reduce negative human impact on the environment within the context of societies dominated by capital markets and state bureaucracy. It’s not all bad news; but we are pessimistic that alternative technologies are enough to improve our situation without mass social movements capable of taking direct action for environmental justice.

We do have hope that humanity can turn things around and we invite further discussion on these issues.
