Angarag Mahanta, known by his nickname Papon, is an Indian singer, composer and record producer from Assam. He is the lead singer and founder of the folk-fusion band called Papon and The East India Company.

Early life

He was born to the Assamese folk singer couple Khagen Mahanta and Archana Mahanta. He spent most of his childhood in Assam and he was introduced to music early on in his childhood.

Career

Papon's initial training was in Indian Classical, devotional (Borgeet) and folk music. He learnt vocals primarily but also plays the khol, tabla, guitar, and harmonium. His music covers genres such as ambient electronic, acoustic folk and new-age Indian classical music and it has been identified as having traces of pentatonic Mongoloid notes, local river song influences and ghazals. Although his first language is Assamese he has also sung in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil, Marathi, Mishing and Bengali.

Mirchi Music Awards

The Mirchi Music Awards are presented annually by Radio Mirchi to honour both artistic and technical excellence of professionals in the Hindi language film music industry of India. The awards, given in seventeen different categories, were instituted to award the best of 2008. In 2010, the Southern edition of the awards – Mirchi Music Awards South was launched,to award the best of 2009. through which artists from the four South Indian film industries—Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam—are being honoured. In 2012, the Bengali edition of the awards – Mirchi Music Awards Bangla was launched, to award the best of 2011.

Jury

The jury for both editions of the awards consists of several experts from the Bollywood music industry. Javed Akhtar, poet and lyricist, is the chairman of the jury. The other members are (listed alphabetically) music composers Aadesh Shrivastava, Anu Malik, Lalit Pandit and Louis Banks, playback singers Alka Yagnik, Kailash Kher, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Sadhana Sargam, Shankar Mahadevan, Sukhwinder Singh and Suresh Wadkar, lyricist Prasoon Joshi, and directors Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and Ramesh Sippy.

Royal Stag

Royal Stag, also known as Seagram's Royal Stag, is a brand of Indian whisky, owned by Pernod Ricard India, and launched in 1995. It is Pernod Ricard's best selling brand. It is a blend of Indian grain spirits and imported Scotch malts. It is commonly available in 1 L, 750 ml, 375 ml and 180 ml bottles and also available in 90 ml and 60 ml bottles. The brand is named after a species of deer famous for its antlers, that is also featured in its logo. It is produced in several company-owned as well as bottler-owned distilleries. It is the first Indian whisky brand to not use any artificial flavour.

Pernod Ricard has identified Royal Stag along with Imperial Blue, Blenders Pride, Chivas Regal and 100 Pipers as the company's five core brands to build its spirits business in India. Royal Stag sold 12.3 million cases in 2011, toppling Absolut Vodka, to become Pernod Ricard's biggest selling brand in its global portfolio of alcoholic beverages. Royal Stag sold 16.1 million cases in 2014.

The Dewarists

The Dewarists is a musical television series on MTV India The series is part music documentary and part travelogue. The show casts musicians from various parts of the world, collaborating to create original music while travelling across India. The first season featured total ten episodes. It featured musicians Imogen Heap, Vishal-Shekhar,Zeb and Haniya, Shantanu Moitra, Swanand Kirkire, Indian Ocean, Mohit Chauhan, Parikrama, Agnee, Shilpa Rao, Shri, Monica Dogra, Rajasthan Roots, Papon, Rabbi Shergill, Shubha Mudgal, Swarathma, MIDIval Punditz, Humble the Poet, Karsh Kale, Baiju Dharmajan, Njeralathu Harigovindan, Raghu Dixit and Rewben Mashangva.

The first season was directed by Vishwesh Krishnamoorthy, ad-filmmaker and frontman of Mumbai Hardcore band, Scribe. The first five episodes also involved UK filmmakers Fred and Nick. The show is hosted by actor-singer Monica Dogra. The Theme music of The Dewarists was given by Raghu Dixit.

In 2013, for the launch of a new season of The Dewarists, the creators of the program altered the format of the show from music inspired journeys and expanded it to include collaborations between musicians and visual artists from India and around the world. Directed by independent film-maker, Srinivas Sunderrajan, the show was broadcast on MTV India in its new format that merges the visual arts with sound to create a multi-sensory experience. The show was also the first collaborative experience to be simulcast on television and on YouTube. Singer Monica Dogra returned as hostess, and also one of the collaborators on the season premiere of The Dewarists Season 3.
