AUT Ngā Wai o Horotiu marae serves as a whānau, cultural and spiritual centre. Ngā Wai o Horotiu is one of the ways in which AUT actively acknowledges the importance of the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and expresses our deeply held belief that AUT is a centre of learning not only for all peoples, but also a particular place where Māori have a special and distinct role.
Ngā Wai o Horotiu is a place where you can stand proud. It is a tangible sign that the University is a learning organisation and one that is always seeking new ways of doing and being. Ngā Wai o Horotiu is the focal point that embraces the history of Māori and welcomes the many rich and diverse cultures at AUT.

Located on the corner of Wellesley and St Paul's Street, the marae is also known as the gateway to AUT and the city of Auckland.

Hiring the marae

Student life at the marae
Wednesday Lunches
Every Wednesday during the semester, lunch is provided for a small koha.
Kai: Filled roll, a piece of fruit and a cup of tea or coffee
Cost: $2.00 student / $2.50 staff
Venue: AUT Ngā Wai O Horotiu Marae, Te Kaipara (Wharekai), City Campus
Time: 12 – 2pm
Titahi ki Tua – Māori Student Association group
Titahi ki TUA is the Māori Student Association for AUT. TKT students meet at the marae every Wednesday for dinner and a sleepover (optional). Dinner starts at 6pm followed by study, kapa haka or whakawhanaungatanga. Titahi ki TUA is an affiliated club of AUSM and also funded by the Office of Māori Advancement.

Student Study Space
The wharekai is available for all AUT students during the week for study from 9 – 4pm. You must be an AUT student and will need to register with Michelle upon arrival to the marae. Study space is only available if the marae is not already booked.

AUT Marae turns 16
Ngā Wai o Horotiu Marae celebrated its 16th birthday and a group of amazing AUTers turned out to mark the occasion. There were live performances, a showcase of short films made by AUT students, an interactive expo, and delicious food including Hāngi. For those who missed out on the fun and entertainment catch a glimpse of what went on.
Te Pūrengi (meeting house)
The wharenui was named Te Pūrengi by the local iwi Ngāti Whātua. The name represents the ropes, which help keep the mast strong and sturdy on its long journey. Te Pūrengi is the focal point of 'Ngā Wai o Horotiu' embracing the history of Māori and the many rich and diverse cultures of AUT.
Te Kaipara (the dining room)
The dining room is called Kaipara after the Kaipara Harbour. Ngāti Whātua traversed the Kaipara from the North. The word ‘para’ is a reference to the para fern which is a traditional Māori delicacy. Kai-para means ‘to eat the para fern’. It’s a fitting name for our dining room. Kaipara – the house of gourmet food.
