Tonight in the Explorers Room: Game of Variants (Continuations on a Long String)

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll play another game of word association and chance-based song sequencing by taking our previous experiment (see here) and vaguely recreating it by choosing songs with similar (and ideally, the same) titles and putting them in the same order.  The two shows should be extremely disparate and yet unmistakably bound to each other.  Tune in for an evening of unusual transitions and bizarre choices.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Moving Worlds, Calypso Sketches, Freaking Out

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear an anxious, restless blend of exotic jazz, calypso, reggae, and profoundly psychedelic, intensely funky West African music.  Should be a good one, do tune in.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Chappell Mood Music Library

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear a survey of sounds from the Chappell Music library, with selections from nearly every release (volumes 1-24 or so) on the Chappell Mood Music sublabel & series,  which made extensive use of Roger Roger – and was home to many of his early experiments with unusual techniques and instruments (the Ondes Martenot in particular). Tune in for an extraordinary variety of sounds drawn from a very narrow field.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Savage and Sensuous Exotica and Jazz

Tonight in the Explorers Room we'll imbibe an extremely potent blend of exotica and jazz.  Yusef Lateef, Buddy Collette, Don Ralke, Chico Hamilton, and even Camarata hold court as bongos and flutes abound in steaming jungles and torrid nightclubs, and exotica standards mix freely with fresh inventions.

As usual, 7-10:00. See you there.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: We're Back!

https://samplerman.tumblr.com/

Tonight, we return at long last to the atmospheric interior of the Explorers Room.  Let's get back into the swing of things with some sets built on chance-based strategies and daisy chains of word association.  Guaranteed to be full of twists and terns.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Year of the Compa簽ero!

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we attempt to go into 2018 with fervor (before taking a three week absence, returning first week in February).  Ferocious French psych, dialectical Calypso, exhortations of comradery, ponderings as to what tomorrow holds, and more, much more.  Join me, tonight, to usher in another year from the exploratory interior.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: A Look Back at the Year That Was

Tonight we look back at another strange year in the Explorers Room with a program comprising one song from each show of 2017.  A retrospective overview of the year that was before we carry on upriver to the as-yet unknown territories of a new year.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Deep in Velvet, An Electronic Magic Carpet

Tonight in the Explorers Room: I just got my good turntable fixed, and Little Danny needs a fill-in for the Cool Blue Flame; that means we'll be lying around, digging in, and hearing five hours of extended cuts from even more dollar-bin records.  Just like that show from a few weeks back, but longer and deeper.  Mood music, latin, exotica, jazz, all sorts of great stuff I've found hiding in the dust – the banal, the sublime, and the subliminal.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Fantasies for Electromagnetic Tape

Tonight in the Explorers Room, we'll hear minimalist and experimental music, syncretic jazz, Turkish electronic sounds, South African masterpieces, and Don Cherry, among other things. Tune in, jump in the comments, hang out in the Room.

Tonight in the Explorers Room: Exotica Gardens – Rituals and Ceremonies in Realms of the Unreal

Tonight in the Explorers Room, an evening of all-exotica pandemonium. We'll be taking a trip to exotic Tiki Gardens (a "South Sea Island Paradise in Florida"), exploring two venerable exotica compilation series – a more tweedy vision of exotica via the Britxotica! Trunk releases, and an extended sojourn in amongst the deranged offerings of the now almost-mythic Jungle Exotica series on Stripand consorting with both Satan and Pele in their respective infernos. Starting in just five minutes!
