Port-au-Prince (/ˌpɔːrtoʊˈprɪns/; French pronunciation: [pɔʁopʁɛ̃s]; Haitian Creole: Pòtoprens) is the capital and largest city of the Caribbean country of Haiti. The city's population was estimated at 987,310 in 2015 with the metropolitan area (aire métropolitaine) estimated at a population of 2,618,894. The metropolitan area is defined by the IHSI as including the communes of Port-au-Prince, Delmas, Cite Soleil, Tabarre, Carrefour, and Pétionville.
The city of Port-au-Prince is on the Gulf of Gonâve: the bay on which the city lies, which acts as a natural harbor, has sustained economic activity since the civilizations of the Arawaks. It was first incorporated under the colonial rule of the French, in 1749. The city's layout is similar to that of an amphitheatre; commercial districts are near the water, while residential neighborhoods are located on the hills above. Its population is difficult to ascertain due to the rapid growth of slums in the hillsides above the city; however, recent estimates place the metropolitan area's population at around 3.7 million, nearly half of the country's national population.

Haiti (i/ˈheɪti/; French: Haïti [a.iti]; Haitian Creole: Ayiti [ajiti]), officially the Republic of Haiti (French: République d'Haïti; Haitian Creole: Repiblik Ayiti), is a country in the western hemisphere, and is located on the island of Hispaniola, in the Greater Antilles archipelago of the Caribbean. It occupies the western three-eighths of the island which it shares with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is 27,750 square kilometres (10,714 sq mi) in size and has an estimated 10.6 million people, making it the most populous country in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the third-most populous country in the Caribbean as a whole.
Originally inhabited by the indigenous Taíno people, Europeans first became aware of the island on December 5, 1492 during the first voyage of Christopher Columbus across the Atlantic. When Columbus first landed in Haiti, he had thought he had found India or Asia. Deciding to establish the first settlement in the area, a contingent of men were left at an outpost christened La Navidad because of the wreck to their sunken flagship, the Santa Maria, that occurred at Christmas, north of what is now Limonade. The island was named Hispaniola and claimed by Spain, which ruled until the early 17th century. Competing claims and settlements by the French led to the western portion of the island being ceded to France, which named it Saint-Domingue. The development of sugarcane plantations, worked by slaves brought from Africa, led to the colony being among the most lucrative in the world.
A prince is a male ruler, monarch, or member of a monarch's or former monarch's family. Prince is also a hereditary title in the nobility of some European states. The feminine equivalent is a princess. The English word derives, via the French word prince, from the Latin noun princeps, from primus (first) + capio (to seize), meaning "the chief, most distinguished, ruler, prince".
The Latin word prīnceps (older Latin *prīsmo-kaps, literally "the one who takes the first [place/position]"), became the usual title of the informal leader of the Roman senate some centuries before the transition to empire, the princeps senatus.
Emperor Augustus established the formal position of monarch on the basis of principate, not dominion. He also tasked his grandsons as summer rulers of the city when most of the government were on holiday in the country or attending religious rituals, and, for that task, granted them the title of princeps.
The title has generic and substantive meanings:

One protester was killed after anti-government protests in Haiti's capital of Port-au-Prince turned violent on Thursday. Hundreds took to the streets to protest against President of Haiti Jovenel Moise and demand the arrest of those who allegedly stole US $2 billion (€1.6 billion) in Venezuelan oil loans. Driving from the airport to Ikondo, I have never seeing this kind of situation in a third world country before.

Once a major tourist destination in the 70's, after wars, epidemics, and dictatorships, Haiti fell off the vacation map. It's still on the State Department's travel warning list, but the Haitian government says it's safe and fun for Americans to visit. Vocativ went to Haiti and talked to the minister of tourism, tour guides, police, to explore what a vacation in Haiti would look like.

Filmed in Cap-Haitien, Hinche, Port-au-Prince and Petit Goave in 2008, two years before the devastating earthquake -- world food prices were dramatically increasing and an UN peacekeeping mission was going on. The film is a record of pre-earthquake Haiti. In Haiti follows the two filmmakers and friends, Florian Wiesner and Fabian Bohnet-Waldraff on a month-long road trip through the island. During their journey they get immersed in the different and complex aspects of haitian reality. Instead of focusing on the usual poverty/violence topics seen in the mass media, the filmmakers present a colorful and deeper pictu...

Haiti Travel Video Guide: Haiti is the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. Tourists who are unsettled by grinding poverty probably should visit elsewhere. However, for those with patience and an open mind, Haiti reveals a rich culture that is unique among post-colonial nations. It is extremely helpful when traveling in Haiti to have a local contact, through a church, a hotel, or just through making friends with someone. Experiences like dining locally, riding on a tap-tap, or strolling through one of the insanely crowded outdoor markets are great fun and very worth doing but are much safer and easier if you have a trusted Haitian to go along as a guide and interpreter. This is the first official part of my road to Eagle Scout. This video is comprised of the various clips that I and my friend, Brandon Bauer, composed while in Haiti. This video is a collection of clips of us just trying to get out of the Port-au-Prince traffic, which makes US traffic look like a drive through the park- not that that is a good idea. Burtone, our driver and one of our translators, was excellent at navigating us out of the city and into the mountains to the guest house where we were surprised to have the wonderful members of Solar Under the Sun waiting for us. More videos will be coming soon as I get the time to edit and tweak them. Please stay tuned, and subscribe, for updates and new releases.

Serving my country was always one of my dreams since I was a kid..... I was sitting in chapel at Oakwood University when they announced a mission trip to Port-de-Paix, Haiti for the summer. I couldn't believe my ears. I always asked God for an opportunity like this. So, I signed up for it and called the first elder of my home church in Maryland to help me with fundraising. By the way shout out to my church in Salisbury, MD "Shekinah In Eden", you're the best. Two months later, I was informed that they didn't get enough students for the trip so the school canceled it. I was very disappointed. I was so determined to go that I decided to go alone with the organization the school was gonna go with. A Canadian girl from the school also decided to go with the organization. When purchasing the fl...
