Wide Palazzo Chigi STORYLINE Italy's first black cabinet minister said on Tuesday that she has become a 'lightning rod' for racist attacks in Italy, but she does not take it personally. Integration Minister Cecile Kyenge spoke just after Italy's Senate vice president rejected calls for the resignation on Tuesday of Roberto Calderoli, leader of the anti-immigrant Northern League, for making a racist slur against Kyenge, comparing her to an orangutan. Calderoli told the Senate he was sorry and would send her a bouquet of flowers. Calderoli has been criticised by Italy's president, premier and a host of ministers and lawmakers for his racist comments. Premier Enrico Letta's Democratic Party called for his resignation, and the premier himself warned the League to put an end to such racist attacks or risk a political confrontation. Kyenge has been targeted by racist slurs from the Northern League ever since she was named integration minister in Letta's government in April (2013). One Northern League politician has called her a Congolese "monkey," while another suggested on Facebook that someone should rape Kyenge so she "can understand what victims of atrocious crimes feel." The 48-year-old minister, who is married to an Italian and has two children, came to Italy from the Congo as a student to study.
