Humanities are academic disciplines that study human culture. In Middle Ages, the term contrasted with divinity and referred to what is now called classics, the main area of secular study in universities at the time. Today, the humanities are more frequently contrasted with natural, physical and sometimes social sciences as well as professional training.
The humanities use methods that are primarily critical, or speculative, and have a significant historical element—as distinguished from the mainly empirical approaches of the natural sciences. The humanities include ancient and modern languages, literature, philosophy, international relations and musicology. Areas that are sometimes regarded as social sciences and sometimes as humanities include history, archaeology, anthropology, area studies, communication studies, classical studies, law, politics, semiotics and linguistics.
Scholars in the humanities are "humanity scholars" or humanists. The term "humanist" also describes the philosophical position of humanism, which some "antihumanist" scholars in the humanities refuse. The Renaissance scholars and artists were also called humanists. Some secondary schools offer humanities classes [almost across all modern legal systems], usually consisting of English literature, global studies and art.
Amanda Anderson is the Andrew W. Mellon Professor for the Humanities at Brown University, and director of Brown's Cogut Center for the Humanities. She was director of the School of Criticism and Theory at Cornell University, a Guggenheim Fellowship awardee in 2009, and an American author. Until the spring of 2012, she was a Caroline Donovan Professor of English Literature and the head of the English department at Johns Hopkins University.
Anderson received her Ph.D. from Cornell University and taught at the University of Illinois before coming to Johns Hopkins in 1999. She specializes in Victorian literature and contemporary literary, cultural, and political theory. Her work on the Victorian period has focused on the relation between forms of modern thought and knowledge (across both literature and the human sciences) and understandings of selfhood, social life, and ethics.
Her most recent book, The Way We Argue Now, analyzes a number of influential theoretical debates over the past decade or so, with special attention to the forms of argument that shape work in pragmatism, feminism, cosmopolitanism, and proceduralism.

Not on purpose, says the "Marketplace of Ideas" author. But the system is starting to hurt them nonetheless. Question: Are humanities degrees high-risk? Louis Menand: Yeah. Well, I think the time to degree is right now the big obstacle to entry into the professions. Now, the median time to degree, to PhD in the humanities is nine years, and that's time as a registered student. The time between Bachelor's degree and a PhD, the median time is over 11 years. So then you're still only on a tenure ladder, you're not tenured. So it generally takes 6 to 8 years after that to get tenure. So that's a very long period of what's essentially apprenticeship, of insecurity. I don't think that's very healthy for any business, certainly not for a business where you want people...

Bill Gates discusses the role of the humanities in solving global problems.
The World Humanities Conference is taking place in Liège, Belgium to re-examine the fundamental role of the humanities. Historically, the humanities are particularly well placed to foster a diverse view of human society. However, they seem to have lost ground in recent decades. It has been said that the invaluable contribution of the humanities is to move towards establishing new human values in times of greater connectivity and also rising uncertainty in the face of new economic, financial and social challenges. Debates over the value of the humanities aren't just confined to the 21st century. In previous centuries, some philosophers dismissed the arts as self-indulgent pursuits incapable of addressing real-world problems. What parallels can be drawn between liberal arts pursuits then and now? English professor Paul Keen returns to The Agenda in the Summer to explain the value of the humanities, past, present and future.

Is America turning its back on the humanities? The evidence seems real when we see declining enrollments in the studies of arts, history, literature, language, and philosophy at colleges and universities across the country. Declining enrollments preface limited budgets for broad areas of inquiry as the promise of STEM curricula woos students to jobs and career paths. Is this a crisis in our culture? This conversation will explore the dilemma. Can the humanities survive and flourish in an age of reverence for technology and quantification? Are practicality and best practices all a society needs? Can we prepare our citizens for democracy absent an appreciation of history and the ideas that shape it? Has ever a decent and rational society come into being without humanistic habits of r...
COPERNICUS FESTIVAL, May 6-11, 2014, Kraków http://www.copernicusfestival.com John Gray discusses the topic of relations between the sciences and humanities, which is of great intrinsic importance all over the world. He argues that it is a mistake to think that social science can ever (or should) be modeled on natural sciences. They are different. They apply different types of phenomena - human beings are not machines, however complicated or unpredictable. They have reason for what they do, they are govern by their view of the world, their (right or wrong) beliefs. And the attempt to model human action on a kind of methodology which is derived from natural science is an error. Gray provides three examples. The first is economy or rather economism, which is an attempt to model all of huma...
The value of a bachelor's degree has diminished in a competitive job market, and the PhD has subsequently been dragged down with it. The demand for tenure-track professors outweighs the supply, leading some to question the value of a PhD, especially those pursuing a doctorate in humanities. Paul Keen, an English professor at Carleton University, joins The Agenda in the Summer to discuss the future of the PhD in the humanities discipline.
Congratulations to all our graduates!

I know why you asked me here
You?re not sure the coast is clear
You?re about to speak your mind
This small talk is a bad sign
How many days have I been here tonight
How many days have I been here tonight
You keep stalling probably
Stretch it to eternity
Can?t feel guilty say your lines
Breakin? my hearts not a crime
How many days have I been here tonight
How many days have I been here tonight
I can?t stand the suspense
How long can I go on like this
How many days have I been here tonight
How many days have I been here tonight
How many days have I been here tonight
I can?t stand the suspense
How long can I go on like this
How many days have I been here tonight
How many days have I been here tonight
