1. THE ARMY OF ELEPHANTS 1

Salaamun ‘alaykum Dear Children, All living things are under the command of Allah (s.w.t.) and in this story, we are going to learn about the birds that were sent from the sky to destroy the army of an evil tyrant oppressor. These very tiny birds have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an in Surah al-Feel. Read along to find out more… 1
3. Our Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) was born in ‘Aamul Feel which means “The Year of the Elephant.” In that year, the tyrant king of Habasha and his big army of elephants headed towards Masjid al-Haram in Makka and destroy the Kaaba. 2 to steal the Hajr al-Aswad

5. In those days, Makka was known for its trade because goods used to come from Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Abraha, the tyrant king had built a big temple in Habasha and had decorated it with gold and silver. He wanted to steal the Hajr al Aswad so that people would come to his temple instead of going to the Kaaba. He did not realize that the Kaaba is the House of Allah. 4
6. Abraha and his army surrounded Makka. They were determined to attack the Kaaba. The Makkans did not have the strength to defend the House of Allah that was built by Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) Abdul Muttalib advised the people to leave their homes and go to the mountainside and pray to Allah (s.w.t.) to help them. 5
7. Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), went to meet Abraha because he wanted his camels back. Abraha expressed his surprise that Abdul Muttalib never asked anything about the Kaaba. In response, he told him that the owner of the Kaabah would take care of His house. 6
8. “The Lord of the House will protect His House” 7
9. Just before the final attack, the biggest elephant would not move any further, even though they tried very hard to push it. 8
10. A large flock of birds each carrying stones in their beaks were sent down by Allah (s.w.t.) to destroy the army. The pebbles hit Abraha and his army. No one survived. A few men returned to Habasha to inform the people of the death of Abraha and his army. 9
11. Abdul Muttalib and the people of Makka thanked Allah (s.w.t.). The birds of Ababeel returned to the skies. 10

Abraha
Abraha (also spelled Abreha) (died after AD 553; r. 525—at least 553), also known as 'Abraha al-Ashram (in Arabic أبرهة الأشرم), was an Ethiopian general then the viceroy of southern Arabia for the Kingdom of Aksum, and later declared himself an independent King of Himyar. Abraha ruled much of present-day Yemen and Hijaz from at least 531 -547 AD to 555 - 565 AD
Career
Dhu Nuwas, the Jewish Himyarite ruler of Yemen, in the period c. 523-525 or c. 518-20 launched military operations against the Aksumite Christians and their local Arab Christian allies. The Aksumites in Zafar were killed, their fortresses in the Yemeni highlands destroyed, and Najran sacked.
Najran fell in 518 or 523 and many members of the Himyarite Christian community were put to death evoking great sympathy throughout the Christian regions of the Orient and prompting an Aksumite military intervention aided by a Byzantine fleet first made in 518/523.
Abraha was either one of the commanders or a member of one of the armies led by King Kaleb of Axum against Dhu Nuwas. In al-Tabari's history, 'Abraha is said to have been the commander of the second army sent by Kaléb after the first failed, led by 'Ariat.

Abdul-Muttalib
Shaybah ibn Hāshim (Arabic: شيبة ابن هاشم عبد المطّلب; c. 497 – 578), better known as ‘Abdul-Muṭṭalib, since he was raised by his uncle Muṭṭalib, was the grandfather of Islamic prophet Muḥammad.
Early life
His father was Hāshim ibn `Abd Manāf, the progenitor of the distinguished Hāshim clan, a subgroup of the Quraysh tribe of Mecca. They claimed descent from Ismā'īl and Ibrāhīm. His mother was Salmah bint `Amr from the Banū Najjār, a clan of the Khazraj tribe in Yathrib (later called Madinah). Hashim died while doing business in Gaza, before ‘Abdul-Muṭṭalib was born.
He was given the name "Shaybah" meaning 'the ancient one' or 'white-haired' because of the streak of white through his jet-black hair, and is sometimes also called Shaybat al-Ḥamd ("The white streak of praise"). After his father's death he was raised in Yathrib with his mother and her family until about the age of eight, when his uncle Muṭṭalib went to see him and asked his mother Salmah to entrust Shaybah to his care. Salmah was unwilling to let her son go and Shaybah refused to leave his mother without her consent. Muṭṭalib then pointed out that the possibilities Yathrib had to offer were incomparable to Mecca. Salmah was impressed with his arguments, so she agreed to let him go. Upon first arriving in Mecca, the people assumed the unknown child was Muttalib's slave, giving him the name ‘Abdul-Muṭṭalib (slave of Muṭṭalib).

Salaamun ‘alaykum Dear Children, All living things are under the command of Allah (s.w.t.) and in this story, we are going to learn about the birds that were sent from the sky to destroy the army of an evil tyrant oppressor. These very tiny birds have been mentioned in the Holy Qur’an in Surah al-Feel. Read along to find out more… 1
3. Our Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.) was born in ‘Aamul Feel which means “The Year of the Elephant.” In that year, the tyrant king of Habasha and his big army of elephants headed towards Masjid al-Haram in Makka and destroy the Kaaba. 2 to steal the Hajr al-Aswad
4. This was Makka… 3
5. In those days, Makka was known for its trade because goods used to come from Syria, Iraq and Yemen. Abraha, the tyrant king had built a big temple in Habasha and had decorated it with gold and silver. He wanted to steal the Hajr al Aswad so that people would come to his temple instead of going to the Kaaba. He did not realize that the Kaaba is the House of Allah. 4
6. Abraha and his army surrounded Makka. They were determined to attack the Kaaba. The Makkans did not have the strength to defend the House of Allah that was built by Prophet Ibrahim (a.s.) Abdul Muttalib advised the people to leave their homes and go to the mountainside and pray to Allah (s.w.t.) to help them. 5
7. Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (s.a.w.), went to meet Abraha because he wanted his camels back. Abraha expressed his surprise that Abdul Muttalib never asked anything about the Kaaba. In response, he told him that the owner of the Kaabah would take care of His house. 6
8. “The Lord of the House will protect His House” 7
9. Just before the final attack, the biggest elephant would not move any further, even though they tried very hard to push it. 8
10. A large flock of birds each carrying stones in their beaks were sent down by Allah (s.w.t.) to destroy the army. The pebbles hit Abraha and his army. No one survived. A few men returned to Habasha to inform the people of the death of Abraha and his army. 9
11. Abdul Muttalib and the people of Makka thanked Allah (s.w.t.). The birds of Ababeel returned to the skies. 10
