11 Kids’ Books on Dealing with Loss, Grief, Illness and Trauma

The Children’s Book Review | October 30, 2014

When children experience serious illness, loss, grief or trauma, it’s crucial to allow them to express and cope with emotions while at the same time, helping them understand, as developmentally appropriate as possible, what is happening. As parents and caregivers help children process these often times new and intense emotions, books are a great resource that can be used to open discussion, grow understanding, and offer encouragement and hope. Books are also useful for fostering understanding and empathy in children who have a friend or classmate going through difficult times or even for those who are just curious.

Here is a list of ten picture books that address a wide range and variety of emotions that young readers may experience when faced with serious illness, loss, grief or trauma. Though these books may not provide all the answers an affected child seeks, they may be able to offer sympathy, a reminder of love and support, and some relief from the weight of confusion and uncertainty.

My Yellow Balloon By Tiffany PapageorgeMy Yellow Balloon

By Tiffany Papageorge, Illustrated by Erwin Madrid

Publisher’s Synopsis: When children experience loss, our instinct is to protect them from pain, so we don’t discuss it or prepare them. But pain and confusion aren’t going away—they’re part of life. In fact, one of the best ways we can help kids through grief and change is to encourage them to express their emotions.

Tiffany Papageorge’s award-winning book My Yellow Balloon™ is a poignant tale of love, loss and letting go, and will serve as a powerful tool for parents, teachers, librarians, and healing professionals.

My Yellow Balloon™ is centered on a boy named Joey and his best friend: a bright yellow balloon. Joey and his balloon do everything together, until the balloon accidentally slips of Joey’s wrist and flies far, far away.
