Authorities Wednesday released the name of an Orange County man who was fatally shot over the weekend after he slashed two deputies with a knife.

Frank Lopez, 48, of Placentia was shot by deputies about 9:35 p.m. Sunday in the 22900 block of Droxford Street and died at a hospital, according to the coroner’s office and the sheriff’s department.

Deputies from the Lakewood Station went to the neighborhood on a report of a suspicious man in an SUV looking into parked vehicles, Deputy Kelvin Moody said.

A second call indicated the man drove onto a lawn, abandoned the SUV and fought with someone before walking away, and deputies located him between two residences, Moody said.

“The suspect was uncooperative, physically attacked deputies and a fight ensued,” Moody said.

The deputies attempted to use a Taser on the suspect but it was not effective, he said.

“The suspect armed himself with a knife and used the knife to cut two of the deputies in their hands, at which time a deputy-involved shooting occurred,” Moody said. “The suspect was struck at least one time in the torso.”
