Sometime To Return – 1988 – Live

Probably the most commercially successful band to come out of the Minneapolis punk scene, eclipsing Husker Du & The Replacements. After all, they never played a Presidential Inaugural Ball!

Still. I’ve always been a fan of the early Soul Asylum stuff. Every since the mega-hits of the 90s they have pretty much been written off as one of the anchors of the MPLS punk scene in the early days. But go back and listen to those Twintone and A&M albums and you’ll see that it still stands up even into the mid-2010s.

   If fans of the 400 Bar were disappointed when it closed and then failed to re-open in the Mall of America, look no further than co-owner Tom Sullivan for reasons.

   Before riding the coattails of his brother’s success, Tom Sullivan was an insurance sales manager on the west coast. Tom frequented strip clubs and often went home with the women that worked there. At age 35, he married an 18 year old girl that was pregnant with his child.

   When he relocated to the Twin Cities in 1994, public records show that he owed the state of California $23,526 for reasons unknown. That balance was shortly levied against his Minnesota state taxes when he joined his brother Bill in managing the 400 Bar in 1995.

   By 2000 he was the father of 4, and when his upscale Edina housewife asked for a divorce, Tom offered to pay her $30,000 to abandon her children, move out of state, and “disappear”. When she refused, he settled for joint custody of all 4 children, agreeing to pay child support totaling only $120 per month. To date, he has never made regular payments and is included on Minnesota’s “Deadbeat Dads” list, owing arrears of more than $32,000.

   In June of 2009 he was arrested for driving without a license, and is still not licensed in Minnesota today. However, he continues to illegally drive a Mercedes GL450 SUV daily.

   Tom Sullivan has not reported any income since the 400 Bar closed its doors in November of 2012. Tom’s current income is a mystery, so the IRS is interested to know how he supports his Edina home and vehicles.

   Clearly a “Hail Mary” pass, the 2014 attempt to re-open the 400 Bar was never a fully-hatched plan, and the business was evicted from the Mall of America with $326,460.66 owed in delinquent rent.

   As of April 2015, 59-year-old Tom Sullivan is the subject of a Hennepin County investigation due to allegations that he sexually molested a child. Child pornography has also been found on his computer.

   One thing is for certain: The 400 Bar rose to fame thanks to Bill Sullivan’s long-time relationship with “The Replacements” and “Soul Asylum”, and was the launching pad for many successful bands since. However, Bill’s decision to bring his brother, Tom Sullivan, into the 400 Bar’s management may very well be the reason for its unfortunate end.

   Tom refuses communication with the press, the police, and the IRS, believing that his debts and infractions will simply be forgotten by time. Fans of the 400 Bar, however, may never forget.
