5 Countries without a military. These 5 nations do not have any military forces. They have no army to go war with or defend themselves with.
5. Vatican City
The smallest country in the world, which houses the Pope, has no standing military. Informally protected by the Italian military, the Vatican’s last official guards, the Palatine Guard and the Noble Guard were abolished in 1970. Internal policing is carried out by the Gendarmerie Corps. The famous Swiss Guard, responsible for the safety of the Pope, is actually a unit belonging to the Holy See, not the Vatican.
4. Costa Rica
After a victory in the Costa Rican civil war of 1948, President Jose Figueres Ferrer abolished the military. Since 1949, the Costa Rican constitution has formally forbidden a standing military. It does have a public security force which performs law enforcement, border patrol and other internal security. Because of their lack of a military, Costa Rica is home to the Inter-American Court of Human Rights and the United Nations’ University for Peace.
3. Solomon Islands
An island chain in the Oceanic region of the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands have gone without armed forces since its independence in 1978. It had a paramilitary force until it was disbanded in 2003 after an ethnic conflict that led Australia, New Zealand and other pacific nations to intervene and restore order. Since this conflict, a large police force and a Maritime Surveillance Unit has provided protection for the country.
2. Liechtenstein
The landlocked principality bordering Austria and Switzerland is most notable for its skiing, for being a tax haven and for not having a military. Liechtenstein abolished its standing army shortly after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 because it was deemed too costly. Currently, their police force and SWAT team carry out internal security measures. The military can reinstate in a time of war, although this is very unlikely as they are a neutral country.
1. Andorra
Located high in the Pyrenees, Andorra, like Liechtenstein, is a tax haven and doesn’t have a standing army. Bordering France and Spain, Andorra receives protection from these countries under separate treaties. Its military hasn’t fought in over 700 years and is voluntary, used primarily for ceremonial duties like presenting the Andorran flag at official functions. It does have counter-terrorism special forces unit which is part of the national police.

The main rebel army in Colombia - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (F-A-R-C) - didn't attend an unprecedented meeting aimed at stemming the 36-year conflict in the South American country.
But the second biggest rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), did attend the meetings on Monday alongside Cabinet members of the Colombian government, U-N representatives and human rights groups.
F-A-R-C had said they would appear.
While major breakthroughs weren't expected, the mere presence of so many of the conflict's participants was seen as a victory in itself.
Colombia Peace is the umbrella group of human rights and other organisations which arranged the three-day conference, which is being held in the Costa Rican city of San Jose.
An official from the U-S government, which has a growing role in Colombia, attended as an observer.
The conference comes after changes in the Clinton administration's drug fighting team were announced in Washington on Monday.
White House drug czar General Barry McCaffrey, one of the architects of the controversial U-S drug policy in Colombia, announced he was resigning in January after five years in the post.
U-S special forces troops are training Colombian army battalions, which will be tasked with wresting control of cocaine and heroin-producing plantations from leftist rebels.
The rebels tax and protect the plantations in return for multimillion-dollar payoffs.
The U-S training is part of a 1.3 billion (b) dollar aid package for Colombian President Andres Pastrana's Plan Colombia - an initiative aimed at wiping out drug trafficking from Colombia and strengthening its democracy.
But activists and local Colombian officials attending the conference object to Plan Colombia, saying it focuses too much on the military aspect and will intensify the civil war.

Inside its 10.000 m2 (1 hectare) rest in an eternal dream 22 ex-Presidents and many Costa Rican artists who marked the future of the country with their actions. Without them, the story would have been completely different, as well as its residents.
This open-sky gallery shelters Costa Ricans of all social classes. Some of the tombstones are majestic, extravagant and sumptuous. Others are discrete, symbolic and worn out by oblivion or vandalism, whose only mission is to steal marble, iron and even belongings of the deceased.

A civil war is a war between organized groups within the same state or country, or, less commonly, between two countries created from a formerly united state. The aim of one side may be to take control of the country or a region, to achieve independence for a region or to change government policies. The term is a calque of the Latin bellum civile which was used to refer to the various civil wars of the Roman Republic in the 1st century BC.
A civil war is a high-intensity conflict, often involving regular armed forces, that is sustained, organized and large-scale. Civil wars may result in large numbers of casualties and the consumption of significant resources. Most modern civil wars involve intervention by outside powers. According to Patrick M. Regan in his book Civil Wars and Foreign Powers (2000) about two thirds of the 138 intrastate conflicts between the end of World War II and 2000 saw international intervention, with the United States intervening in 35 of these conflicts.

It lasted for 44 days (from 12 March to 24 April 1948), during which approximately 2,000 people are believed to have died. The conflict was precipitated by the vote of the Costa Rican Legislature, dominated by pro-government representatives, to annul the results of the presidential elections held in February, alleging that the triumph of opposition candidate Otilio Ulate had been achieved by fraud.
This caused a rebel army under commander José Figueres to rise up against the government of President Teodoro Picado,the government was quickly defeated. After the war, Figueres ruled for a year and a half as head of a provisional government junta which abolished the military and oversaw the election of a Constitutional Assembly in December, which subsequently produced the new 1949 constitution. The junta then stepped down and handed power to Ulate. Costa Rica has not experienced any significant political violence since.

Costa Rica (
i/ˌkoʊstə ˈriːkə/; Spanish: [ˈkosta ˈrika]; literally meaning, "Rich Coast"), officially the Republic of Costa Rica (Spanish: República de Costa Rica), is a country in Central America, bordered by Nicaragua to the north, Panama to the southeast, the Pacific Ocean to the west, the Caribbean Sea to the east, and Ecuador to the south of Cocos Island. It has a population of around 4.5 million, of whom nearly a quarter live in the metropolitan area of the capital and largest city, San José.
Costa Rica was sparsely inhabited by indigenous people before coming under Spanish rule in the 16th century. It remained a peripheral colony of the empire until independence as part of the short-lived First Mexican Empire, followed by membership in the United Provinces of Central America, from which it formally declared sovereignty in 1847. Since then, Costa Rica has remained among the most stable, prosperous, and progressive nations in Latin America. Following a brief but bloody civil war, it permanently abolished its army in 1949, becoming the first of only a few sovereign nations without a standing army.

But the second biggest rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), did attend the meetings on Monday alongside Cabinet members of the Colombian government, U-N representatives and human rights groups. F-A-R-C had said they would appear. While major breakthroughs weren't expected, the mere presence of so many of the conflict's participants was seen as a victory in itself. Colombia Peace is the umbrella group of human rights and other organisations which arranged the three-day conference, which is being held in the Costa Rican city of San Jose. An official from the U-S government, which has a growing role in Colombia, attended as an observer. The conference comes after changes in the Clinton administration's drug fighting team were announced in Washington on Monday. White House drug czar General Barry McCaffrey, one of the architects of the controversial U-S drug policy in Colombia, announced he was resigning in January after five years in the post. U-S special forces troops are training Colombian army battalions, which will be tasked with wresting control of cocaine and heroin-producing plantations from leftist rebels. The rebels tax and protect the plantations in return for multimillion-dollar payoffs. The U-S training is part of a 1.3 billion (b) dollar aid package for Colombian President Andres Pastrana's Plan Colombia - an initiative aimed at wiping out drug trafficking from Colombia and strengthening its democracy. But activists and local Colombian officials attending the conference object to Plan Colombia, saying it focuses too much on the military aspect and will intensify the civil war. Costa Rica has had only one war fought on its soil in recent history - the Costa Rican Civil War of 1948. It is interesting to note that this country of "Pura Vida" only has one memorial commemorating this event in history. An island chain in the Oceanic region of the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands have gone without armed forces since its independence in 1978. It had a paramilitary force until it was disbanded in 2003 after an ethnic conflict that led Australia, New Zealand and other pacific nations to intervene and restore order. Since this conflict, a large police force and a Maritime Surveillance Unit has provided protection for the country.
2. Liechtenstein
The landlocked principality bordering Austria and Switzerland is most notable for its skiing, for being a tax haven and for not having a military. Liechtenstein abolished its standing army shortly after the Austro-Prussian War of 1866 because it was deemed too costly. Currently, their police force and SWAT team carry out internal security measures. The military can reinstate in a time of war, although this is very unlikely as they are a neutral country.

Bordering France and Spain, Andorra receives protection from these countries under separate treaties. The main rebel army in Colombia - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (F-A-R-C) - didn't attend an unprecedented meeting aimed at stemming the 36-year conflict in the South American country.
But the second biggest rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), did attend the meetings on Monday alongside Cabinet members of the Colombian government, U-N representatives and human rights groups.
F-A-R-C had said they would appear.
While major breakthroughs weren't expected, the mere presence of so many of the conflict's participants was seen as a victory in itself.
Colombia Peace is the umbrella group of human rights and other organisations which arranged the three-day conference, which is being held in the Costa Rican city of San Jose.
An official from the U-S government, which has a growing role in Colombia, attended as an observer.
The conference comes after changes in the Clinton administration's drug fighting team were announced in Washington on Monday.
White House drug czar General Barry McCaffrey, one of the architects of the controversial U-S drug policy in Colombia, announced he was resigning in January after five years in the post.
U-S special forces troops are training Colombian army battalions, which will be tasked with wresting control of cocaine and heroin-producing plantations from leftist rebels.

The main rebel army in Colombia - the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (F-A-R-C) - didn't attend an unprecedented meeting aimed at stemming the 36-year conflict in the South American country.
But the second biggest rebel group, the National Liberation Army (ELN), did attend the meetings on Monday alongside Cabinet members of the Colombian government, U-N representatives and human rights groups.
F-A-R-C had said they would appear.
While major breakthroughs weren't expected, the mere presence of so many of the conflict's participants was seen as a victory in itself.
Colombia Peace is the umbrella group of human rights and other organisations which arranged the three-day conference, which is being held in the Costa Rican city of San Jose.
An official from the U-S government, which has a growing role in Colombia, attended as an observer.
The conference comes after changes in the Clinton administration's drug fighting team were announced in Washington on Monday.
White House drug czar General Barry McCaffrey, one of the architects of the controversial U-S drug policy in Colombia, announced he was resigning in January after five years in the post.
U-S special forces troops are training Colombian army battalions, which will be tasked with wresting control of cocaine and heroin-producing plantations from leftist rebels.

At that time, the red cross in the Costa Rican capital of San Jose reported that seven Nicaraguan aircraft bombed and strafed several vehicles and ranches inside Costa Rican territory, killing or wounding at least 25 people.

The Laotian Civil War (1953--75) was a fight between the Communist Pathet Lao (including many North Vietnamese of Lao ancestry, and the Royal Lao Government in which both the political rightists and leftists received heavy external support for a proxy war from the global Cold War superpowers. Among United States Central Intelligence Agency Special Activities Division US and Hmong veterans of the conflict, it is known as the Secret War.[8]
The Kingdom of Laos was a covert theatre for battle for the other belligerents during the Vietnam War. The Franco--Lao Treaty of Amity and Association signed 22 October 1953, transferred remaining French powers -- except control of military affairs -- to the Royal Lao Government -- which did not include any representatives from the Lao Issara anti-colonial armed nationalist movement[9] — and otherwise establishing Laos as an independent member of the French Union.[10]
The following years were marked by a rivalry between the neutralists under Prince Souvanna Phouma, the right wing under Prince Boun Oum of Champassak, and the left-wing Lao Patriotic Front under Prince Souphanouvong and future Prime Minister Kaysone Phomvihane. A number of attempts were made to establish coalition governments, and a "tri-coalition" government was finally seated in Vientiane.
The fighting in Laos involved the North Vietnamese Army, American, Thai, and South Vietnamese forces directly and through irregular proxies in a battle for control over the Laotian Panhandle. The North Vietnamese Army occupied the area for use as the Ho Chi Minh Trail supply corridor and staging area for offensives into South Vietnam. There was a second major theatre of action on and near the northern Plaine des Jarres.
The North Vietnamese and Pathet Lao emerged victorious in 1975, as part of the general communist victory in Indochina that year.

Costa Rican President Oscar Arias' Central American peace plan could provide a similar framework to end the conflict in Nicaragua. Or, then again, we could have another Viet Nam.
Our speaker, Dr. Charles Clements, who has been called ""the Quaker terrorist"" by the El Salvador government for his humanitarian medical work behind rebel lines in that country, will share with us his prognosis for the region. Clements, Director of Human Rights Education for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in Boston, is an outspoken peace activist and has led Congressional delegations to Central America. He has talked with heads of state, Contras and Sandinistas, and community leaders, in the area.
Clements served as a U.S. Air Force pilot in Viet Nam and as a doctor helping civilians in rebel-held territory in El Salvador. His book, ""Witness to War: An American Doctor in El Salvador"", inspired a 1986 Oscar-winning film documentary on his experiences. Clements will also speak to a Portland meeting of Unitarian Universalist delegates on Central American issues. "

Our speaker, Dr. Charles Clements, who has been called ""the Quaker terrorist"" by the El Salvador government for his humanitarian medical work behind rebel lines in that country, will share with us his prognosis for the region. Clements, Director of Human Rights Education for the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee in Boston, is an outspoken peace activist and has led Congressional delegations to Central America. He has talked with heads of state, Contras and Sandinistas, and community leaders, in the area.
Clements served as a U.S. Air Force pilot in Viet Nam and as a doctor helping civilians in rebel-held territory in El Salvador. His book, ""Witness to War: An American Doctor in El Salvador"", inspired a 1986 Oscar-winning film documentary on his experiences. Clements will also speak to a Portland meeting of Unitarian Universalist delegates on Central American issues. "

Around midnight on May 3, Dana Seetahal, a prominent attorney and former senator in Trinidad and Tobago, had just left a casino in the capital of Port of Spain when her vehicle was stopped by another car blocking the road. A van pulled up alongside and let loose a burst of gunfire, killing her in a well orchestrated hit.
Her murder was one of approximately 170 that have occurred in the Caribbean nation so far this year, putting it on course for one of the highest murder rates in the world. The country saw only 93 murders in 1999. Last year, there were 407.
VICE News visited the slums of Port of Spain and spoke with police, activists, community leaders, and gangsters to understand the country's decade-plus spike in killings. Many of the murders are attributed to ruthless and politically connected street gangs who control territories that are sometimes no larger than a city block. The gangs fight over lucrative government contracts meant to provide social services and combat unemployment.
But gang violence is merely a symptom of a bigger problem. Trinidad has become an important stop for drugs headed to West Africa and the United States. Many observers point to "the big fish" — the nameless political and business elites who are behind drug trafficking and the culture of endemic corruption and murder that come with it. They are accused of turning a country rich in oil and gas deposits into their own personal narco-state, fostering impunity through a web of bribes and murders. Unlike the profits from the energy industry, however, this phenomenon trickles all the way down to the street level.

Federico was in Berlin and only 12 years old as he witnessed the wall come down. The punk and skinhead culture were rampant in Berlin at this time, which had a profound effect on the 12-year-old latino American kid, "They used to chase me".
Federico moved back to a Costa Rica, which was “a lie” and rife with political corruption, homelessness & monetary inequality. Like all young Costa Ricans at the time, he felt angry & quickly turned anti-establishment. He was lost in a world that was leaving kids like him behind, which led him to find friends in the rough alternative sub-culture of; punk-rock, graffiti, hip-hop and skating. It is here where he found his healthy obsession for documenting, filming and recording. He started doing something he loved, which, organically grew into something much larger than himself, larger than anyone could imagine. He captured the inception, birth and growth of these subcultures all throughout Central America.
Federico's 20 year project is a documentary film, “Todos Hermanos Centroamericanos”, which is a collation of film clips that capture the growth of these subcultures from their birth. He also captures the wider central America at a time where half of the countries were in the midst of a civil war.

Kotto was born in New York City. His mother was Gladys Marie, a nurse and U.S. Army officer. His father is Avraham Kotto (originally named Njoki Manga Bell), a businessman from Cameroon who immigrated to the United States in the 1920s. In his autobiography titled Royalty, Kotto writes that his father was "the crown prince of Cameroon". But, Cameroon is a republic and its monarchs have limited responsibilities as auxiliaries of the state, which they must support at all times. It is a typical example of an intrastate African monarchy.
Kotto said he learned that his father's family was royal in adult life while studying his family's lineage, and said he is also a descendant of Queen Victoria. According to Kotto, his father was an observant Jew who spoke Hebrew. *Kotto's mother, who was of Panamanian descent* , converted to Judaism before marrying his father. Kotto claims that his great-grandfather, whom he names "King Alexander Bell", ruled the Douala region of Cameroon in the late-19th century and was also a practicing Jew. *Kotto has said that his paternal family originated from Israel many centuries ago, migrating to Egypt and then Cameroon, and have been African Jews for many generations. His claim of being a descendant of Queen Victoria has been denied by the Buckingham Palace press office*.

The Five Civilized Nations had accepted the Plains Indian's land and were receiving adequate government food supplies, while the Plains Indians were hungry. Resentment to the Five Civilized Nations also occurred due to their adoption of the white man's ways such as farming, style of dress, home building and to some degree, slavery for life, based on a person's color and blood line.

This 1959 film is a U.S. Army documentary about a typical West Point summer training program. This rugged summer schedule takes place each year at Camp Buckner, New York, where cadets of the United States Military Academy who have just finished their "plebe" year gain valuable field experience.
CONTEXT / HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The United States Military Academy (USMA), also known as West Point, is a four-year coeducational federal service academy located in West Point, New York in Orange County. It was originally established as a fort that sits on strategic high ground overlooking the Hudson River with a scenic view, 50 miles north of New York City. It is one of the four U.S. military service academies, and one of the five U.S. service academies.
The United States Military Academy has been educating, training, and inspiring leaders of character for the United States Army and for the American nation for more than 200 years. The Academy traces its roots to 1801, when President Thomas Jefferson directed, shortly after his inauguration, that plans be set in motion to establish the United States Military Academy at West Point.
Candidates for admission must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a member of Congress or Delegate / Resident Commissioner in the case of Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, American Samoa, and the Virgin Islands. Other nomination sources include the President and Vice President of the United States. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as "cadets" or collectively as the "United States Corps of Cadets" (USCC). Tuition for cadets is fully funded by the Army in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,300 cadets enter the Academy each July, with about 1,000 cadets graduating.
The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades cadets' performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Cadets are required to adhere to the Cadet Honor Code. The academy bases a cadet's leadership experience as a development of all three pillars of performance: academics, physical, and military.
Most graduates are commissioned as second lieutenants in the Army. Foreign cadets are commissioned into the armies of their home countries. Since 1959, cadets have also been eligible to "cross-commission", or request a commission in one of the other armed services, provided that they meet that service's eligibility standards.
The academy's alumni and students are collectively referred to as "The Long Gray Line", and its ranks include two Presidents of the United States (as well as the President of the Confederate States of America), presidents of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and the Philippines, numerous famous generals, and seventy-six Medal of Honor recipients.
Military Program & Summer Training:
While academic courses are the building blocks of most typical universities, career development at West Point is geared toward the cadet's goal of being an officer in the United States Army, so military discipline and training are paramount to their officer development. Cadets are immersed from day one in a military environment where they are organized in companies and serve in leadership positions within the Corps of Cadets. The heart of the military training takes place during the summer. The basic Soldier skills of rifle marksmanship, land navigation, and close combat are but the underpinnings of each cadet's initial training the first summer; by graduation every cadet has participated in small-unit leadership training; attended military schools such as Airborne and Air Assault; served as senior leadership to junior cadets' summer training; and interned as an office in active duty units across the globe. Each summer of training builds the leadership skills of the previous, so that by graduation each cadet is prepared to lead Soldiers and serve the nation.

Like many countries in the Middle East and beyond, Bahrain erupted with anti-authoritarian protests in 2011 when the Arab Spring took the region and many of its repressive leaders by surprise.
While Arab Spring uprisings found favor with many in the West, unfortunately for the people of Bahrain, their own revolution was largely forgotten. But it never went away — for three years, near-nightly protests have been brutally quashed by militarized security forces.
Earlier this year, VICE News correspondent Ben Anderson travelled to London to speak with Nabeel Rajab, the unofficial leader of Bahrain’s uprising, and then headed undercover to Bahrain, where he met activists, protestors, grieving parents, and alleged torture victims.
