On the shores of the world's largest permanent desert lake & the world's largest alkaline lake, is a vibrant fishing economy.
Fish is the staple food for the communities living along the Western Shores of Lake Turkana.
Here, men work as fishermen, boat builders, and transporters while the women earn their living by employing this task force & paying the fishermen from the returns received from selling the fish caught in their nets.
These activities take place at the Kalimapus Fish Banda.
A lack of storage and preservation facility has for many years led these communities to practice substinence farming.
With support from UNDP Kenya through NDMA Kenya
the community now has a fish rack, solar fish drying sheds, solar freezers and piped water.
The facility has enabled preparation, selling and access to viable markets easy while maintaining fish quality.
This project is funded by Japan - The Government of Japan
