Maasin, officially the City of Maasin or simply Maasin City, is the capital city of Southern Leyte, Philippines. A fourth class city with 70 barangays, it is located on the western part of the province with land area of 21,171 hectares (52,310 acres). According to the 2010 census, it has a population of 81,250.
Maasin City is the commercial and religious center of Southern Leyte and the south-western part of Leyte Island. On August 10, 2000, Maasin was converted into a city. The Diocese of Maasin was founded on August 14, 1968.
The island of Limasawa in Southern Leyte carved a very significant place in Philippine history. In 1521, a Portuguese-born Spanish explorer and navigator, Ferdinand Magellan and his crew came ashore and celebrated the first Roman Catholic Mass on the island. Incidental to the historic event, Magellan made peace with two Filipino rulers, Rajah Kolambu and Rajah Siani who subsequently were converted to Christianity. A marker notes the spot on Limasawa where their blood compact of friendship and alliance was sealed.
Southern Leyte (Cebuano: Habagatang Leyte; Filipino: Timog Leyte) is a province in the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region. Its capital is the city of Maasin. Southern Leyte was once a sub-province of Leyte before it was divided from the latter. Southern Leyte includes Limasawa, an island to the south where the first Roman Catholic Mass was held and considered to be the birthplace of Roman Catholicism in the Philippines.
The province ranks as the second least populated in the region. According to the 2010 census, the province has a population of 399,137
Southern Leyte's geological features created several issues in the province after the flooding of the Subangdaku River and the 2006 mudslide in Guinsaugon. Organizations warned the province it was susceptible to natural occurrences like landslides and floods.
Southern Leyte contributes to the economy of the country. It forms an important part of the inter-island transportation system of the country, with ferries transporting people and goods between Liloan and Surigao del Norte in Mindanao. The province is well known for its quality abaca products and is the country's major producer of abaca fiber.

Our trip to Leyte after Typhoon Haiyan. We used Ipad google maps as our guide going to Surigao. Our team is composed of returned missionaries of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and we know the people, the language, the area. On our first night, we stayed in a hotel(Southern Star Realty and Travel and Tours) in Maasin near Pres. Andaya (Mission president of Tacloban Mission). Second night, we had to split. Our team stayed in Carigara chapel and the other team stayed in the Yolanda Headquarters of the LDS Church in Ormoc. Along the way, members fed us so we didn't really have problem with food. We were able to come up with gasoline funds because we did caroling to some members and other generous individuals. Toys were donated by Davao Stake. We used tamaraw FX so we c...

A waterfall that is waiting to be explored - the Mahayahay Falls locally known as Karap-agan Falls situated in Brgy. Mahayahay in Matalom, Leyte. This falls has a 2 layers of water drops. Mahayahay or ayahay means 'easy life' in visayan dialect but the road going to this place wasn't that ayahay. You have to passed by on a muddy and rocky road, trek a river and wild grasses but everything is worth it once you get to the falls. We just found out from the driver on that day that there is a cave nearby - the Hitoog Cave in Brgy Hitoog. The cave has a fresh cold water that flows and serve as a potable water to the residents. HOW TO GET THERE: If you're coming in any part in Leyte, ride a van that goes to Matalom, Leyte. Tell the driver to drop you at downtown of Matalom or in Brgy. Caridad...
