Alsace ([al.zas]; Alsatian: ’s Elsass [ˈɛlsɑs]; German: Elsass, pre-1996 also: Elsaß [ˈɛlzas]; Latin: Alsatia) is a cultural and historical region in eastern France, now located in the administrative region of Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine. Alsace is located on France's eastern border and on the west bank of the upper Rhine adjacent to Germany and Switzerland.
From 1982 until January 2016, Alsace was the smallest of 22 administrative regions in metropolitan France, consisting of the Bas-Rhin and Haut-Rhin departments. Territorial reform passed by the French legislature in 2014 resulted in the merger of the Alsace administrative region with Champagne-Ardenne and Lorraine to form Alsace-Champagne-Ardenne-Lorraine.
The historical language of Alsace is Alsatian, a Germanic (mainly Alemannic) dialect also spoken across the Rhine, but today most Alsatians primarily speak French, the official language of France. The political status of Alsace has been heavily influenced by historical decisions, wars, and strategic politics. The economic and cultural capital as well as largest city of Alsace is Strasbourg. The city is the seat of several international organizations and bodies.
France (French: [fʁɑ̃s]), officially the French Republic (French: République française [ʁepyblik fʁɑ̃sɛz]), is a sovereign state comprising territory in western Europe and several overseas regions and territories. The European part of France, called metropolitan France, extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the English Channel and the North Sea, and from the Rhine to the Atlantic Ocean. France spans 643,801 square kilometres (248,573 sq mi) and has a total population of 66.6 million. It is a unitary semi-presidential republic with the capital in Paris, the country's largest city and main cultural and commercial centre. The Constitution of France establishes the state as secular and democratic, with its sovereignty derived from the people.
During the Iron Age, what is now Metropolitan France was inhabited by the Gauls, a Celtic people. The Gauls were conquered in 51 BC by the Roman Empire, which held Gaul until 486. The Gallo-Romans faced raids and migration from the Germanic Franks, who dominated the region for hundreds of years, eventually creating the medieval Kingdom of France. France emerged as a major European power in the Late Middle Ages, with its victory in the Hundred Years' War (1337 to 1453) strengthening French state-building and paving the way for a future centralized absolute monarchy. During the Renaissance, France experienced a vast cultural development and established the beginning of a global colonial empire. The 16th century was dominated by religious civil wars between Catholics and Protestants (Huguenots).

Colmar (French: Colmar, pronounced: [kɔlmaʁ]; Alsatian: Colmer [ˈkolməʁ]; German between 1871–1918 and 1940–1945: Kolmar) is the third-largest commune of the Alsace region in north-eastern France. It is the seat of the prefecture of the Haut-Rhin department and the arrondissement of Colmar-Ribeauvillé.
The town is situated on the Alsatian Wine Route and considers itself to be the "capital of Alsatian wine" (capitale des vins d'Alsace). The city is renowned for its well preserved old town, its numerous architectural landmarks and its museums, among which is the Unterlinden Museum with the Isenheim Altarpiece.
Colmar was founded in the 9th century, and is mentioned as Columbarium Fiscum by the monk Notker Balbulus in a text dated 823. This was the location where the Carolingian Emperor Charles the Fat held a diet in 884. Colmar was granted the status of a free imperial city by Emperor Frederick II in 1226. In 1354 it joined the Décapole city league. The city adopted the Protestant Reformation in 1575, long after the northern neighbours of Strasbourg and Sélestat. During the Thirty Years' War, it was taken by the Swedish army in 1632, who held it for two years. In 1548 Josel of Rosheim urged the Reichskammergericht court to repeal the Colmar market ban for Jewish merchants.
Richard "Rick" Steves (born May 10, 1955) is an American author and television personality focusing on European travel. He is the host of the American Public Television series Rick Steves' Europe, has a public radio travel show called Travel with Rick Steves and has authored numerous travel guides.
Steves started his career by teaching travel classes through The Experimental College, a student-run program of non-credit classes at his alma mater, the University of Washington, and working as a tour guide in the summer. At the time, he also worked as a piano teacher (his father had owned a piano store). In 1979, based on his travel classes, he wrote the first edition of Europe Through the Back Door (ETBD), a general guide on how to travel in Europe. Steves self-published the first edition of his travel skills book ETBD in 1980. Unlike most guidebook entrepreneurs, he opened a storefront business. Initially, this was both a travel center and a piano teaching studio. He held travel classes and slide show presentations, did travel consulting, organized a few group tours per year, and updated his books. He did not provide ticket booking or other standard travel agency services. He incorporated his business as "Rick Steves' Europe Through the Back Door." The store was in Steves's hometown of Edmonds, Washington, north of Seattle. The company's headquarters are still in Edmonds. Steves' first television show, Travels in Europe with Rick Steves, debuted on public television in April of 1991 and ended production in 1998. His second show, Rick Steves' Europe, debuted in September of 2000, and has produced episodes through 2014, though because he does not produce a season every year, this accounts for eight seasons.

Alsace is a famous region in north eastern France that’s been producing wine for centuries. Lauren LeBrun from the Expedia Viewfinder blog shows us why it’s one of the best areas in France for wine tasting and village hopping. The region stretches across 40,000 acres and more than 100 villages. Riquewihr is a town in central Alsace that dates back to medieval times. Being there makes you feel like you’ve traveled back in time! Walk down the cobblestone streets and you’ll see timber-framed, brightly-painted buildings. The architecture has been carefully preserved throughout the centuries, so it appears almost identical to how it looked in the 1500s. Obernai is one of the popular small towns to visit in the Alsace region of Eastern France. Unlike Andlau, Obernai was quite busy and there were quite a bit of tourists wandering around and taking photos. The town itself is full of interesting sights and I really loved the brightly colored timbered buildings throughout the old town. I really enjoyed the few hours I spent in Obernai and there are plenty of restaurants, cafes, and small shops worth checking out if you’re ever fortunate enough to visit the town. Puis nous prendrons de l'altitude avec une randonnée initiée par le Club Vosgien pour finir dans une auberge typique alsacienne. Nestled between the Vosges Mountains and the Rhine River, Alsace is a picturesque landscape of quilted vineyards and quaint medieval villages. Join our host Michael Fagan, as we travel through this little corner of France and discover its wines, indulge in its cuisine and revel in its natural beauty. Produced in 2002

These are some of the finest food programmes the BBC ever produced. They date back to when the department within which they were made was Education, not Entertainment. http://www.whitings-writings.com/essays/mireille.htm

We do a wine tour of Alsace France one of my favorite wine regions on the planet and so underrated. We'll meet some of the best and oldest producers, tour the vineyards and cellars and hit the second longest running restaurant to hold 3 Michelin stars continuously in France while we're at it.
Salut bisame !
Slowly moving onwards -
Perceive the light of day
Hazy in the distance -
No need for delay
A piercing ray of sunlight -
The moring will prevail
Horizons getting clearer -
The darkness lifts her veil
A myraid of colours -
A rainbow drop of dew
Scatters iron bridges -
Of thoughts I always knew
A turbulent upheaval -
The water froths and churns
As if the cool surroundings -
Is laughing as it burns
A river flowing to the sea
No way of knowing its destiny
Skipping over stones and telling stories
Of a life carried along
The water making up a song
Settling for the motions -
Of pathways preordained
All must travel onwards -
The riverbed maintained
Delight in our confinement -
Make haste and join the fray
The stone of life is rolling -
No time to halt and play
A river flowing to the sea
No way of knowing its destiny
Skipping over stones and telling stories
Of a life carried along
The water making up a song
A space opens before me -
A journey's at an end
Pain or true salvation -
What's waiting round the bend?
Mingling with the silence -
I hear a distant roar
The end I had imagined -
Is just another door
A river flowing to the sea
No way of knowing its destiny
Skipping over stones and telling stories
Of an end that never is
